This means the termination of the Archery, Bass Fishing, Esports, Baseball, Softball, Tennis, and Track & Field seasons. In partnership with our State Department of Education, the Governor’s office, our member schools, the NFHS and similar to many other state associations, KHSAA staff has been directed to work remotely from home until at least April 10 (revised 4/2/20). Administrators will available via email. Our hope is to return to the office for regular hours later in April, however, this is a very fluid situation and could change at any time. Updates will be posted online.

As of now and through at least May 1, all activity by rostered participants, coaches and those who have participated in at least one practice session for a middle or high school remain shut down as do all athletic facilities in control of our membership. 01/16/19 – Board of Control Sets Sites for State Softball and State Archery; Reviews Football Playoff Format

2018-2019 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 16, 2019

In its first meeting of the new year on Wednesday at the KHSAA Offices, the Board of Control finalized locations for two spring championships while addressing the future playoff structure for football and continuing its research for future revisions to state golf.

Following last year’s action by the Board to transition the state softball tournament from a double-elimination format to single elimination, create an eight-team state tournament and a semi-state round, KHSAA staff sent out information to prospective cities interested in hosting the event. After reviewing information and options from both Lexington and Louisville, the Board approved a recommendation to award the 2019 and 2020 State Softball Championships to the University of Kentucky’s John Cropp Stadium.

“The young ladies in the Commonwealth are so blessed to have great facilities interested in hosting the revised state tournament format,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “It will change many of the dynamics […]

06/06/18- Sport Activity Specific Dead Period Reminders

Archery Blog Updates

As the dead period approaches, it is important to remind all coaches about sport-activities (bowling, competitive cheer, dance, archery, bass fishing) during the dead period. The sport-activity specific contacts at the KHSAA are Michael Barren (mbarren@khsaa.org) for Archery; Darren Bilberry (dbilberry@khsaa.org) for Bass Fishing, Sarah Bridenbaugh (sbridenbaugh@khsaa.org) for Bowling and Dance; and Butch Cope (bcope@khsaa.org) for Cheer.

Any participation by student-athletes during the dead period would be a violation of Bylaw 24 if the school were to be involved in any way, including coaching, transportation, funding, providing uniforms, use of school facilities, entering or using the school name or all other specifics mentioned in Bylaws 23, 24 or 25.

Though individual participation itself by a student-athlete in a non-school or school-team based activity may not necessarily be a violation of KHSAA rules, the dates from June 25 – July 9, preclude any Kentucky school representative from participating in an event during […]

Archery Blog Updates

Based upon feedback from the Archery Advisory Committee following their discussions in a meeting on December 15th, Association staff proposed a change to the format of the state archery tournament. For the last two years, the archery state tournament included a “medal round” in which the top four teams would shoot another round to determine the team champion. However, members of the Advisory Committee expressed concerns that the medal round asked too much of the student-athletes, as shooting two full flights in one day, which is not in line with the normal physical training regimen for shooting, puts undue physical stress on the students. Following Board approval, the medal round will be eliminated, which will allow staff the option to expand the number of qualifying teams and individuals, if desired, by using those afternoon slots previously used by the medal round.

The Board also accepted a recommendation to revise the awards structure for the regional and […]

01/12/17 – Board of Control Addresses Alignment Issues, Archery Championship

2016-2017 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 12, 2017

During the course of its regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Thursday, the Board of Control addressed alignment issues and championship details in several sports, while also approving a requested new trial pilot program for the 15th Region Tournament.

Following the consolidation of South Floyd and Allen Central High Schools, changes were needed in the basketball alignment (and subsequently the alignments in baseball, softball and volleyball) for the 15th Region. KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett attended a meeting of the Superintendents in the impacted districts on January 9 to review options related to the region. Facing challenges like an imperfect geographically aligned region and a pattern of reduced sport offerings by some schools in the region, there were few obvious non-impactful options available. With that in mind, the Superintendents expressed an interest in a multi-year pilot program where their teams would play one less […]

12/21/16 – Updated Archery Scoring Protocol for 2016-2017

Archery Blog Updates

The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) has changed its scoring protocol for the upcoming season. To accommodate our schools who compete in both NASP and KHSAA competitions, we are amending our scoring protocol to match this new standard. It is important to teach and practice this process with your archers so they can complete it quickly and accurately, and to make sure that scoring is consistent for all competitions.

  • One of the archers (this will be Archer A) will pick up the scoreboard from the target line.

  • Archer A will then call and bubble the arrows for the other archer (Archer B) without touching the arrows. Archer B will listen to the arrow values as they are called to make sure they are correct.

  • Archer A will then hand the scoreboard to Archer B.

  • Archer B will verify that the proper values were bubbled and place a checkmark in the small box to the […]

10/13/16-Important Safety Reminder for Archery Schools

Archery Blog Updates

This important notice is being distributed to all KHSAA member schools. Because the participation in Archery is ever-expanding and because there are several schools that compete in Archery but as of yet, don participate in KHSAA competition, it is important that all schools be aware of this concern.

As partners with KY NASP, we are very fortunate that the National Archery in the Schools Program, NASP®, has maintained a perfect safety record since its inception in March of 2002. One reason for this success is our strict adherence to NASP safety protocols. We are very pleased that KHSAA has agreed to use the NASP® rules and protocols for Kentucky High School archery. This has led to a quality and continued safe archery experience for participating students across the Commonwealth.

A few months ago, it came to the attention of NASP representatives that some schools are allowing archers to shoot high poundage bows in school gyms. The safety […]

04/19/16 – 2016 KHSAA State Archery Championship Set for Thursday at KBA

2015-2016 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 19, 2016

The 2016 KHSAA State Archery Championship gets underway Thursday morning at the Kentucky Basketball Academy in Lexington. The competition begins at 9 a.m. with the first of six hour-long flights. The four teams with the highest overall scores across the opening flights will advance to the championship round, scheduled for 3:30 p.m., followed by an awards presentation for the top four teams and the top eight individuals.

Last year, Trigg County’s Clay Stevens became the first student-athlete to post a perfect score of 300 at the state championship en route to capturing the 2015 individual state title. Stevens’ performance helped Trigg County claim its third-consecutive team championship. The Wildcats finished with a total score of 4,507 points during the championship round, followed by Madison Central (4,484), Anderson County (4,466) and Letcher County Central (4,463).
