Bunny Daugherty, Donna Moir & the spirit of Sacred Heart
BY MIKE FIELDS (Feb. 26, 2018)
LOUISVILLE – A trailblazer and advocate for girls’ high school sports. Decades of dedication as an athletic director and coach. More than a dozen state championships to her credit. KHSAA Hall of Famer.
Bunny Daugherty’s legacy at Sacred Heart Academy endures strongly to this day, 20 years after she passed away on February 26, 1998.
“With her love of sports, she made a connection with everybody,” said Donna Moir, the Valkyries’ current basketball coach and AD.
Daugherty, whose motto was “Kids + Sports = Fun”, coached just about everything at Sacred Heart and she guided teams to 13 state titles — golf (5), tennis (5), field hockey (2), basketball (1).
Intent on creating opportunities for young female athletes, Daugherty was instrumental in starting the girls’ Louisville Invitational Tournament in basketball and the Apple Invitational Tournament in field hockey almost 50 years ago.
The Courier-Journal called her the Susan B. Anthony of […]
02/23/18-Football Schedule Moratorium, Draft 2019 Alignment Procedures
All football playing member schools are reminded that football contracts signed prior to May 10 for games beyond the 2018 season will not be considered valid as the moratorium on scheduling remains in place. In addition to the alignment changes, there will also be consideration of all bracketing parameters for the playoffs as well as scheduling grids and other factors that make signing contracts premature prior to that time.
At its regular meeting on February 21, the Board of Control approved a draft alignment of football teams for distribution. The board accepted the requests of seven schools to play into a higher class and one team to withdraw from district play. That document is listed at http://khsaa.org/football/realignment/2019-2022/memo%20to%20board%20summary%20of%20responses.pdf
The Board then approved the distribution of a draft alignment of teams. The alignment is detailed at http://khsaa.org/2019-2020-through-2022-2023-draft-football-alignment/
An interactive map of the classes is located at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1VRZArVmbCYCGsYMP-BBE-Ih4R_zxa7uo&ll=38.858223851796694%2C-85.76905&z=8

02/22/18 – 2018-2019 NFHS Soccer Rule Changes
Soccer teams will be reversing their home and visiting uniforms next year. Effective for the 2018-2019 school year, the home team will now wear dark jerseys and socks while the away team will now wear solid white jerseys and socks.
The uniform change was among the new rules announced by the NFHS last week, which can be viewed at: http://www.nfhs.org/articles/homevisiting-uniforms-to-switch-in-high-school-soccer/

02/21/18 – Board of Control Addresses Postseason Format for Softball, Suspends the Implementation of the International Tiebreaker for the 2018 Postseason
During the course of its February meeting at the KHSAA offices on Wednesday, the Board of Control deliberated on the postseason format for the sport of softball, with the Board voting for the event to transition to a single-elimination format in 2019. The move to single elimination will bring the softball championship more in-line with the baseball state tournament while also helping to alleviate concerns with the potential overuse of pitchers under the current double-elimination format.
“We have been discussing the future and the format of the state softball tournament for the last several years, and I applaud the Board for the steps it took today in approving our recommendations,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “Examining the state softball and baseball tournaments, you would be hard-pressed to say the events were equitable for the participants and fans in their current formats. Moving to a single-elimination format where each team plays one game per day in […]

As coach or mayor, Bill Mike Runyon has Paintsville at heart
BY MIKE FIELDS (Feb. 7, 2018)
PAINTSVILLE — Paintsville Mayor Bill Mike Runyon was sitting behind his desk at city hall — which is across the corner from where as a kid he’d set up his shoe-shine kit on Saturdays, and just down the street from Paintsville High School where he played, coached and taught for four decades — and he was talking about what his hometown means to him.
“Paintsville is Bill Mike Runyon’s life,” he said, his eyes lighting up. “I don’t think people realize that no matter what small community you’re from, it’s the people within that community when you were growing up — your parents, your uncles, your aunts, your teachers, your coaches, your friends — those are the people that kicked you in the butt and got you going in the right direction.
“Well, that’s what Paintsville did for me. And now that I’m sitting in this chair, I want […]
