05/09/13 – NFHS Basketball Rules Changes for 2013-2014
Head coaches in high school basketball will be allowed to come onto the court in an effort to break up a fight or keep a situation from escalating. Previously, the head coach could only enter the court if beckoned by an official.
This revision to Rule 10-4-5 was one of five rules changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee at its April 15-17 meeting in Indianapolis. All rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
While the head coach and his/her assistants must continue to ensure that players remain on the bench during a fight, the committee agreed that the presence of the head coach on the court could be instrumental in preventing the situation from escalating, and the coach also could assist game officials in controlling the situation.
In other changes, the rules committee approved the use of electronic devices during the game […]

04/15/13 – Board of Control Approves Moving KHSAA Sweet 16® Finals To Sunday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 15, 2013
After reviewing the 2013 KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16®, the Board of Control voted today in favor of a proposal to move the championship games of the boys’ and girls’ Sweet 16® to Sunday starting in 2014. The format change allows for the semifinals to be conducted as a standalone event on Saturday, and gives the participants more time to prepare and recuperate leading up to the championship game.
“We examined the format of our basketball tournaments from a number of different perspectives, and in the end, felt like it was time to move the championship game to Sunday. Separating the championship game from the semifinals, really makes an event out of the Saturday games for those final four teams,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “We think the added rest leading up to the championship game will not only benefit the health and safety of the students, it […]

Information will be posted here concerning traffic impact from construction on Versailles Road with Boys Sweet 16®
Beginning February of 2013, work will begin on a total overhaul of US60 (Versailles Road) from the Bluegrass Parkway through State Road 4 (New Circle Road).

Delays are expected at the intersection of Versailles Road and Man O’War (next to Bluegrass field) as that are normally has several more lanes.
Patrons coming from the west who desire to avoid the congestion and construction have a couple of desirable alternatives.

02/04/13 – Board of Control approves change in 3-team district regulations for BA, BK, FP, SO and VB effective 2013-2014
At its meeting last week, the KHSAA Board of Control approved a staff recommendation to give teams in three-team districts options as to the scheduling of required games. Three-team districts in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball will continue to be seeded by rule. 01/30/13 Exos Braces Worn on The Forearm or Wrist Ruled are Illegal for Basketball
Our office has been contacted several time regarding the Exos Brace being worn on the forearm or wrist. NFHS Basketball Rule 3-5 article 2a states: A guard, cast or brace made of hard or unyielding substance, such as, but not limited to, leather, plaster, plastic, or metal shall not be worn on the elbow, hand, finger/thumb, wrist or forearm; even though covered in soft padding. Because the dial is plastic this brace cannot be worn during competition. We were able to confirm this ruling in a phone conversation today with the NFHS office.01/28/13 – Board of Control Approves Basketball Region I, Statewide Wrestling Realignments
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 28, 2013
The KHSAA Board of Control approved new alignments for Basketball Region I and all eight Wrestling regions during its January meeting at the KHSAA office on Monday.
Following the consolidation of schools in McCracken County, KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett and area Board of Control members met with representatives from the first region in Mayfield. With all Region I schools in attendance, the feedback from the meeting was to realign within the region, and not bring additional teams into the region. Three options for realignment were presented following the meeting in Mayfield. On Monday, the Board voted to approve Option A for the 20013-14 season (detailed below), which will also be applied to baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball:
District 1 – Carlisle County, Fulton City, Fulton County, Hickman County
District 2 – Ballard Memorial, Graves County, Mayfield
District 3 – Community Christian, McCracken County, Paducah Tilghman, St. Mary
[…]1/28/13 – Board approves realignment proposal for Region 1
Today at the regular Board of Control meeting, the Board of Control approved the alignment of teams in Region 1 to begin with the 2013-2014 school year. These decisions are never easy, but this one was made smoother by the great cooperation and feedback from the member schools in Region 1. The Board honored the wished of the schools to leave the membership in Region 1 intact (not move any new school into the region), and approved option A as presented to the schools at the meeting of schools in Mayfield. These changes will be mirrored wherever possible and practical in the alignments for baseball, softball, volleyball and soccer, as well as basketball.
Again, thank you for all of your help and communication.
The alignment of teams effective for 2013-2014 in Region 1 will be:
District 1 – Carlisle County, Fulton City, Fulton County, Hickman County
District 2 – Ballard Memorial, Graves County, Mayfield

01/11/13 – Home Uniforms Must Be White
The KHSAA office has received a few reports of schools not wearing white jerseys for home contest. As many of you know the NFHS gives a four year window when making a uniform rule change. Rule 3-4c was handled in this manner. The 2012-2013 season was the first year that the torso color of home jersey be white was mandatory. The phase in period is designed to allow schools a typical rotation and replacement period to make this change.
If a school has worn a jersey other than white at home, the school should self report this incident to our office immediately.

12/21/12 – Originially posted 10/25/12 – BK Official Scorekeeper Shirts and Running Clock Clarification
We have received many calls asking about the official scorekeeper shirt. The new rule reads that the official scorekeeper must wear a black and white garment to identify themselves at the table for players and officials benefit. The KHSAA supports the rules of the NFHS and ask that schools make every effort to comply.
This garment may be a black and white sweater, t-shirt, etc. We recommend an officials shirt as it is the most easily identifiable. This also allows for an added element of professionalism to your table crew. It will also be very helpful for players as they report in and for officials as they report to the table. There will be no penalty for the lack of compliance at this time, but officials may report the non compliance to their assigners.
Running Clock questions have also risen. To clarify, once the running clock has started it will continue until the games end. We also […]

11/12/12 Online Rule Clinics Extension
The free period for the mandatory online basketball rules clinic is being extended until November 30. Any coach who has taken the clinic since the deadline, and paid the $100 late fee, will be refunded. In order for your coach to receive credit, they must first be entered by the school into the schools coaching personnel and login to the school page of the KHSAA website (http://schools.khsaa.org/authorize/login.php?url=/index.html). If the coach is new, they must first create a password before logging in. Once logged in they should choose “view online rules clinics” from the menu.
The reason for the extension is the due to the late hiring of assistant coaches, and the fact that assistants are required to view the clinic being new this year.
10/4/12 – Reminder about Basketball Coaching Box
From the KHSAA competition rules for all games at all levels,

8/16/12 – Courage in Munich Seminar to Georgetown College
Rarely do high school students have the opportunity to hear about an important chapter in world history straight from the people who made it, but such an opportunity will present itself to Kentucky youngsters on Friday, Aug. 24, at Georgetown College.
The 12 members of the 1972 United States Olympic basketball team – the one that was literally cheated out of the gold medal in the most controversial game ever – will appear with distinguished journalists and scholars at a series of four seminars beginning at 9 a.m. in the college’s conference center. All four of the seminars will be free and open to the public.
The seminars will discuss the historical, political, and sociological implications of the team’s decision to not accept the silver medal – the first and only time that has happened in Olympic history. One of the seminars also will be devoted to the invasion of the Olympic Village that resulted […]
8/10/12 – “Fall Ball” and Bylaw 25 Reminders
We have had several inquiries from Administrators and Coaches with regard to coaches involvement during the school year with members of their team (or other interscholastic teams within the school). These issues have been particularly brought to light with respect to baseball and softball programs.
Coaching is defined as any activity by the coach at a time the athletes are participating in skills (either preparatory or specific to that sport) in a setting in which skills are taught, refined, or practiced. Coincident participation by a coach and an athlete in a sport such as a golf outing, where the coach and athlete(s) are not entered as a entry or group, or in an activity such as distance running with many runners but no direct coaching, would not specifically be considered coaching.
The “off-season” is the period during the school year for each sport or sport/activity that is outside the defined start and […]
07/31/12 – Boys’ Sweet 16® Championship Game Set for Sunday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 31, 2012
2013 BOYS’ SWEET 16® CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SET FOR SUNDAY
For the first time in the 95-year history of the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16®, the tournament championship game will be played sometime other than Saturday night.
The traditional state tournament format will undergo a transformation for the 2013 event due to potential scheduling conflicts with Rupp Arena.
“We received a request a few days ago from the University to consider other Saturday (and potentially Sunday) alternatives in the event that the final schedule for 2012-2013 necessitated the Wildcats playing at home on Saturday, March 9,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “The 2013 scheduling has been a constantly evolving challenge for a while as we had previously surrendered our contracted dates for the arena to allow UK to host the NCAA Second/Third round that year.”
The semifinals, a doubleheader that has been played on Saturday morning for more than fifty years, […]

The specifics on how officials are to administer this new rule will be addressed in the near future.
The mercy rule/running clock provision has been added to other sports over the past years including football and soccer.

Prime Date Basketball Scheduling Requirement
In fairness to the participants in girls’ basketball, and those within the programs including parents, students and fans, the Board of Control has developed this policy to ensure that there are opportunities for girls’ basketball to be played on “prime dates”.
These dates are Friday night, any time on Saturday, and any time on Sunday. Compliance with this policy neither expresses nor implies that a member school is in (or not in) compliance with Title 20, U.S.C. Titles, 1681-1688, et. Seq. (Title IX).
