05/01/18 – Reminder Multi-Event Athletes, Regional & State Track Meet
We want to remind Athletic Directors and coaches about the strict time schedule at postseason track meets. Throughout the regular season, we realize that many athletes are competing in a rolling schedule style meet. However, both the regional and state track meets are structured to be held to a specific time schedule. With the state meet taking at-large qualifiers, it is important that all 21 regions adhere to a strict time schedule to ensure competitive fairness for the at-large qualifiers attempting to advance to the state meet.
Managers are required to ensure that the regional meets adhere to the posted time schedule. Events cannot start before the published scheduled time. This allows for the same amount of rest for all athletes competing across the state when qualifying for at-large positions. Each regional time schedule has been created and can be found by clicking the link below:

04/26/18 – Baseball-Softball Minimum Contests For Postseason Requirement
Several schools in both baseball and softball have contacted the office recently to express concerns about the impact this spring’s weather conditions are having on their schedules. While those schools reaching out to our office originally had more than ten (10) contests scheduled, the constant inclement weather conditions this spring have obviously made it difficult to complete those games.
In the competition rules for baseball and softball, there has long been a requirement that in order to be eligible for the postseason a member school must have a schedule of ten (10) or more contests. For those that seek clarification, this doesn’t require ten (10) contests to have been played.
So long as a school is a member eligible for postseason play, they will be eligible for the postseason provided the school had an original schedule of at least ten (10) contests.

04/25/18- Reminder about Football Scrimmages and Contact Restrictions
There have been several inquiries to the office about football scrimmages for 2018 in light of recent action by the KHSAA delegates at the Annual Meeting. Therefore, this additional reminder is being issued.
At that meeting of the delegates, a proposal was passed which would allow all schools to have two (2) pre-season scrimmages in football, regardless of whether or not a week zero (0) game was played. The proposal received the requisite number of votes and has been recommended for implementation by the Board of Control but has not yet received final approval through the regulatory process.
In light of the need for scheduling and planning, we will operate as though the proposal will receive final approval. There is minimal risk of this proposal failing to receive regulatory approval and as such, schools may schedule a second scrimmage for this fall (2018) regardless of first regular season week.
However, it is important to remember that this […]

The Mayer/Maile Magic Carpet Ride
BY MIKE FIELDS (April 25, 2018)
Amy Mayer is one happy sports mom/aunt these days, and she almost feels guilty about it.
Her and husband Andy’s sons AJ and Michael were integral players on Covington Catholic’s state championship football and basketball teams.
Her nephew Luke Maile (son of her brother Rich and wife Laurie) is playing some terrific baseball for the Toronto Blue Jays.
And her nephew Jack (Luke’s brother), a football and baseball standout at CovCath, led the Colonels to victory over arch-rival Highlands at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati over the weekend.
“It is all kind of unbelievable,” Amy said. “It’s kind of like, ‘Is this real? Somebody pinch me because I feel like I’m dreaming.’ It’s like we’re overwhelmed with goodness and blessings. It’s almost like a Disney movie.”
It began with CovCath’s Class 5A football title last fall. AJ starred at quarterback; Michael at defensive end/tight end, and Jack as […]
04/24/18 – KHSAA State Archery Championships Set For Thursday at KBA
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 24, 2018
The 2018 KHSAA State Archery Championships get underway Thursday morning at the Kentucky Basketball Academy in Lexington, with the first of six flights starting at 9:30 a.m. The last flight of the day is set for 2:30 p.m., with awards presentations tentatively scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
This year’s state Archery Championship will be the first to award a girls’ team championship, following action taken by the Board of Control in January. The event was previously treated as a coed sport-activity with one overall team championship awarded. Team trophies will be presented to the top four boys’ and top four girls’ teams at this year’s event, with medallions presented to the top five individuals for each gender.
In 2017, Madison Central posted a team score of 3,442 to edge state runner-up Lafayette by two points (3,440) and repeat as state champions. Model’s Joshua Smith captured the boys’ individual state championship […]
RIP Bill Miller: A most genuine baseball man
BY MIKE FIELDS (April 24, 2018)
Bill Miller, the most genuine baseball man I ever met, passed away Monday. He was 68.
If there is an open acre in Heaven, Miller will turn it into a baseball diamond and be happy hitting fungoes for eternity.
Bill Miller was the baseball coach at Pleasure Ridge Park for nearly four decades, and in that time built the Panthers into the best high school program in Kentucky.
They won six state championships — the first in 1994, the last in 2017 — because Miller was tough and demanding, and as gritty as infield dirt.
His 1,144 victories at PRP stand as a state record, and a tribute to sustained excellence.
I first got to know Miller in the early 1980s, before PRP was a baseball powerhouse. He was a proud PRP alum (Class of 1967), and had played catcher in baseball and fullback in football, so toughness was […]

04/19/2018 – Softball Statistical Reporting
REQUIRED STATISTICS ENTRY
Now that the season is in full swing following spring break, the KHSAA will again be using MaxPreps to compile statistical leaders in the sport of softball.
Teams will be required to input their roster into MaxPreps. Rosters entered for statistical purposes are separate and apart from the required roster entry through the KHSAA website for eligibility purposes. Entering for statistics does not relieve the school of required entry on the KHSAA website and student-athletes not on the KHSAA online roster are not eligible to participate (freshman, JV or varsity).
This roster entry can be done by syncing your Game Changer account with your MaxPreps account. Since Game Changer syncs with MaxPreps, schools won’t have any additional data entry if this sync is turned on.
SIGNING UP FOR MAXPREPS
Coaches can go to www.maxpreps.com/join if they haven’t already signed up for a MaxPreps account.

04/19/18 – Baseball, Softball Stat Leaders Now Available at KHSAA.org
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 19, 2018
Statistical leaders for baseball and softball will once again be available at KHSAA.org through the Association’s continued partnership with MaxPreps. Reports will be automatically generated every morning from data entered by member schools through MaxPreps and Game Changer.
Member schools are solely responsible for submitting statistical information. The KHSAA has no involvement in the collection or maintenance of stats for baseball or softball, and all corrections should be directed to MaxPreps and/or the team in question.
If a school or individual is omitted from the stat leaders report, or information is not current, that means the team in question did not update its statistics prior to that morning’s automated update (4 a.m. ET). More information on entering stats through MaxPreps and Game Changer can be found at http://bit.ly/2JUwjMV.

Shon Walker’s Hall of Fame game wasn’t just the long ball
BY MIKE FIELDS (April 17, 2018)
CYNTHIANA — Shon Walker still looks like he could step up to the plate and, with that sweet, smooth left-handed swing of his, send a baseball flying to the hinterlands.
Except . . .
“I tore a ligament in my leg playing kickball at our company picnic,” he said with a laugh.
Walker confessed his injury — and his concession to age — on a recent spring evening at River Road Park where he was helping instruct his son Donovan’s Little League team in practice.
Walker, 43, played his last minor league baseball game 20 years ago, but he still feels drawn to the diamond.
“The fresh-cut grass, getting the chalk out, I love all of it,” he said.
Walker’s love for the game, his talent for playing it, and his remarkable accomplishments at Harrison County High School, will be recognized when he’s inducted into the Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of […]
4/16/2018 – Bass Fishing Region 4 Tournament Moved to Herrington Lake
As a result of the rain this past weekend the water level at Cave Run Lake rose about a foot making nearly all ramps unusable. After reviewing all options with Tournament Directors from Fishing League Worldwide and The Bass Federation, the decision was made to move the 2018 KHSAA Region 4 Bass Fishing Tournament to Herrington Lake. Launch will take place from Chimney Rock Marina.
There is a launch fee of $8.00 per boat at this location. Please note that the Highway 152 Bridge (Kennedy Bridge Road), just south of Chimney Rock Marina, is closed for repair so you will need to plan your route accordingly.
There is no need to re-register your boats for the tournament, however you can view all of the updated information in regards to the Region 4 Tournament by clicking on the following link:

Hall of Famer Angela Payne Starnes loves teaching as much as running
BY MIKE FIELDS (April 9, 2018)
Angela Payne Starnes will be retiring at the end of this school year, giving up her duties as an elementary school physical education teacher.
And her duties as a high school/middle school athletic director.
And her duties as a track & field coach.
And her duties as a cross country coach.
And her duties as a school bus driver.
With all the running she does to keep up with five jobs, it should come as no surprise that Starnes was a championship runner in her younger days.
As a high school track star at Todd County Central, Angela Payne won seven state titles.
As a sophomore in 1978, she was the 440-yard champ and part of the winning 4×100 relay.
As a junior she captured the 400-meter dash and another 4×100 victory.
As a senior she swept the 400, 200 and 100 sprints.
Payne’s winning time of :12.20 in […]
04/09/18- Four (4) Contest Minimum Removed from Most Sports/Events by Board of Control
At it’s most recent meeting, the Board of Control addressed concerns from several of the Commissioner’s Advisory Committees, particularly those representing the individual sports. These concerns surrounded a long-standing Association requirement for a set number of entries into high school competition prior to entering the region. In addition to issues relative to tracking, record keeping and monitoring, the Commissioner and his staff also noted issues relative to the problems this requirement causes at the local level and the inhibiting factor that these requirements might have on multi-sport participation.
Following a review of the discussion in various committees, a review of the rules in most other states, and based on a recommendation from the Commissioner after input from staff, the Board voted to continue to require four interscholastic contests in event-specific competition for those students entering the region meeting in Diving (Swimming and Diving) and Pole Vault (Track and Field). Only competition involving grades 9 through 12 […]
04/09/18 – NFHS Music Copyright Course Required for Cheer/Dance Coaches
At its July Board of Control meeting, the Board approved a recommendation that would require completion of the new NFHS Music Copyright Course for KHSAA Cheer and Dance Coaches (Head and Assistant). Because of delays in rolling the course out this year, the course will be required for 2018-19 for those all coaches in all Cheer and Dance squads at KHSAA member schools. This requirement is in place whether or not a team competes in KHSAA competition. The course is free, and totally online, and must be completed prior to the declaration date for Cheer and Dance (October 1, 2018).
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has added an online education course – Understanding Copyright and Compliance. This free course from the NFHS is geared toward music teachers, spirit coaches (cheer and dance) and school administrators. Understanding Copyright and Compliance is available through the NFHS Learning Center at www.NFHSLearn.com.
The course explores copyright […]
04/09/18- Implementation of HB290, Play Against Home School Individuals
During its 2018 Regular Session, both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly approved HB290, and the bill was signed into law by the governor on April 2. See the full text of the bill at http://www.lrc.ky.gov/recorddocuments/bill/18RS/HB290/HCS1.pdf with a digest of the proceedings at http://www.lrc.ky.gov/record/18RS/HB290.htm. With the signing by the governor, the bill will go into effect on July 1, 2018, for KHSAA member schools.
The bill will necessitate an amendment to KHSAA Bylaw 22, Sec. 1 (listed at https://khsaa.org/handbook/bylaws/20172018/bylaw22.pdf) and this amendment will be done through the normal regulatory approval process this spring. Member schools will be able to engage in competition, should they choose, against homeschool units or involve homeschool students enrolled in Kentucky beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.
- This change DOES NOT allow KHSAA member schools to participate against other schools located in located in Kentucky that have chosen not to join the KHSAA.
- This change DOES NOT allow homeschool students […]
04/09/18- Reminder About Corresponding Date Rollover – 2018-19 through 2021-22 And Changes in Basketball, Tennis and Track & Field Schedules
This reminder is for all member schools as scheduling decisions are made relative to 2018-2019 and beyond. Athletic Directors and others scheduling contests should pay close attention to the information at https://khsaa.org/general/resources/corresponding-dates/. These charts are invaluable when scheduling year-to-year. It is critical that athletic directors and athletic administrators ensure that this information is passed on to any coach that assists with scheduling in any sport.
Events that are always held the same time each year, or contests played between opponents regularly at the same time each year, should use the corresponding week numbers for reference when choosing dates, not the relative position within the month. In other words, schools should think in terms of the game always being in week 12, 13, 14, etc., rather than the last weekend in December or first weekend in March. Using the corresponding week numbers will help prevent inadvertent scheduling issues.
For example, a quick look at https://khsaa.org/handbook/correspondingdates/federationcalendar.pdf illustrates a […]
