Internship Opportunities at the KHSAA
Interns at the KHSAA have the unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience and knowledge regarding the management of state tournaments and special events. The KHSAA provides interns with the ability to work closely with staff members and tournament managers. In addition to working state events, interns will assist in the KHSAA office to gain personal experience in social media/marketing, tournament preparation and publication development.
These internship opportunities are fitting for individuals looking to gain experience in the field of athletic event management and become more knowledgeable of athletic association work.
The KHSAA accepts one intern for each season (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer).

The mandatory Online KHSAA Rules Clinic for the sport of Football is now available following a minimal delay for system maintenance. The clinic is required of all officials as well as all coaches, varsity, junior varsity and freshman, and whether or not the coach receives pay.
Because of the nature of this year’s rules changes, coaches you are placing your team at a competitive disadvantage if you delay/put off/procrastinate the completion of this clinic. Officials, your failure to stay on top of these key changes will likely lead to administrative errors. It is an unusual year with minimal rules changes, but those that were made are not only safety-related, but impact game administration.

08/01/18- Memo and Update to KHSAA Football Assigning Secretaries
7-PERSON MECHANICS
- I have waited on the NFHS for most of the summer, originally expecting their new 7-person manual back in May only to find last week at our meeting that the publication likely won’t be ready until September. It is somewhat of a long story, but suffice it to say that re-formatting the drafts from the Manual Committee into the standard NFHS format has taken a lot longer than they expected. However, the fundamentals are included in the attached document.
- Consider that the front sections, etc. are the same as the four and five-person manuals, let’s focus on field coverage.
- Attached you will find the framework from the TSSAA that the committee was using for the development of their mechanics.
- We will use these mechanics without deviation with the exception that we will switch sidelines at half.

07/31/18 – Reminder About Bylaw 9 Restrictions
As the summer comes to a close, the KHSAA wanted to remind Athletic Directors, coaches, student-athletes, and parents about Bylaw 9, which has been in place for many years. Bylaw 9 restricts student-athletes in basketball and football, who after enrolling in grade nine (9) and have subsequently been a contestant in either sport at some level, from playing in outside competition once the school year begins and until the end of the season. This bylaw places a restriction on nonschool athletic participation in an attempt to protect students who choose to participate on their school’s athletic teams from exploitation by those who seek to capitalize on their skill and/or reputation.
Recent changes in the bylaw do allow permissible competition by student-athletes across the Commonwealth. Eight student-athletes from across the state will represent the KHSAA at the NFHS National Student Leadership Summit, July 23-25, at the Hyatt Regency in Indianapolis, Ind. The eight student-athletes will form the KHSAA’s Student Advisory Committee for the 2018-19 school year and will assist in the planning and execution of the Hype Student Leadership Conferences in August.

07/20/18- Coach Qualification and Requirement Reminders
As another year starts, and with the tremendous turnover in school administrators, it is critical that the requirements for coaches are rigidly complied with by our member schools. While adherence is a membership requirement that all schools have signed pledging agreement and compliance with, and the requirements are included in Bylaw 25, most are also part of state law or regulation. In addition to penalties by the KHSAA under Bylaw 27, failure to comply places the school and school district in a particularly perilous situation should any unfortunate incident occur as the liability would be difficult to escape.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association filled a newly created position on its staff this week with the hiring of Dan White as its Event Management Specialist. White comes to the KHSAA from the University of Pikeville, where he spent the last five years as UPIKE’s Assistant Athletic Director/Sports Information Director.

07/17/18- Reminder about Bylaw 24 and Organized Boys’ Basketball Play in July
There were several inquiries today concerning boys’ basketball events in July. Schools are reminded that due to the provisions of Bylaw 24, there can be no organized play by boys’ basketball teams during July. This restriction does NOT apply to girls basketball. Per the Bylaw, “Students shall not participate in any organized team activity or organized or semi-organized team competition in boys’ basketball between the end of the dead period and July 31. During this period, students may participate in activities such as weight training, skill development, individual camps (with per team limits on participation) and accepted open gym/field activities where no inter-school competition is involved.”

07/17/18- 2018-2019 Regional Athletic Administrators Meetings of Membership
This reminder is for all member school Superintendents, Principals and Athletic Directors within the KHSAA.
For the fall of 2018, the KHSAA will again conduct a series of eight regional meetings to help our athletic administrators meet the membership requirement of attending this type of meeting once per year.
Per the membership guidelines, attendance is required of each school but is no longer specific to the principal or principal certification. The Principal or the Designated Representative listed on the KHSAA website will count toward each requirement. Also, this workshop is on the list of those items that satisfy the requirements for the continuing improvement hours for each Athletic Director per Bylaw 25. There is no registration fee.

07/17/18 – Officials Division Updates- Assigning Secretary Contracts/Payments
As we are now set to begin another year, please review the following changes that are now in place with regard to the KHSAA Officials Division:
ASSIGNING SECRETARY CONTRACTS
Fall Sports Assigning Secretaries contracts will be emailed the week of July 16. Winter Sports will be emailed in September and Spring sports in January.
ASSIGNING SECRETARY PAY – OF116
Assigners will no longer complete the OF116 Assigning Pay online form. This form will be revised and submitted by the Regional Policy Board Chairs (RPBC). The RPBC will be responsible for gathering the information and collecting payment from schools/local associations and submit the data through the OF116.
The KHSAA will then create an invoice for the Regional Policy Board (RPB) to be sent to the RPBC and then the RPBC will remit funds to the KHSAA. The KHSAA will then issue payment to the Assigners. This should help streamline the process and eliminate the […]
07/17/18 – Officials Division Updates- Scratches and Evaluations
As we are now set to begin another year, please review the following changes that are now in place with regard to the KHSAA Officials Division:
SCRATCHES
The KHSAA Board of Control approved two changes with regard to scratches beginning in 2018-19.
Per the Federal Court Order of 1971, as amended in 1987, schools must be given an opportunity to scratch an official. However those limitations have been varied over the years and in many cases, have created near impossible situations for assigners to staff games or selective desires by coaches. Standardizing the number of scratches allows for their continued use in those limited situations where they are deemed essential without allowing for the “gamesmanship” that sometimes occurs within the system.
Beginning this year, a coach/school may now have not less than two (2) and not more than (3) scratches in any sport. Scratches must be denoted at the beginning of the year. Local […]
04/09/18 – Bowling Dead Period Reminders
It is important to remind all coaches about sport-activities (bowling, competitive cheer, archery, bass fishing) during the dead period. This includes both middle and high school students per 702 KAR 7:065.
Any participation by student-athletes during the dead period would be a violation of Bylaw 24 if the school were to be involved in any way, including coaching, transportation, funding, providing uniforms or all other specifics mentioned in Bylaw 23, 24 or 25. Though participation itself by a student-athlete may not necessarily be a violation of KHSAA rules, the dates from June 25 – July 9, preclude any Kentucky school representative from participating in an event during ANY PART of the dead period including transportation or any part of the event if the event extends into the dead period. The KHSAA is seeking member schools interested in hosting a Sectional postseason competition in the sport-activity of Dance. Sectionals will be held November 17-18 at four locations across the Commonwealth, with the competitions grouped by Regions (1-4, 5-8, 9-12 and 13-16). Good afternoon. On behalf of our entire staff, we hope many of you as building and athletic administrators are back and ready to go after taking advantage of the only two “down” weeks of the athletics year with dead period!
This year, there have been only minor changes to the required KHSAA online roster and the school management system. Rosters have been rolled from the previous year, and may now be edited for the coming seasons as well as sport and sport-activity offerings. Though there are minor enhancements being fine-tuned, there is no reason for a delay in entering and editing rosters. We will again conduct a thorough review of the system through demonstrations at the regional meetings and staff is available to assist at any time.

In his battle with cancer, Chris Hendrick finds refuge in baseball
Chris Hendrick died Monday after battling cancer for three years. He was 28. I wrote about Chris’s brave fight when he was umpiring in the 2018 state baseball tournament. Condolences to his family. May they cherish the memories of Chris and his courage.

While Chris Hendrick is undergoing chemotherapy today in Louisville, he will occupy his mind with happy thoughts of umpiring in the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament the past two weekends in Lexington.
Hendrick, who has been battling cancer the past 21 months, finds refuge on the diamond.
“Any baseball game gives me a chance to feel normal,” he said after working Friday night’s semifinal game between Hazard and St. Xavier at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

06/15/18- Reminders about Off Season Football Practice, Workouts and Equipment
Recently, the KHSAA office staff has received several inquiries about football camps and other activities. As the summer vacation period continues, it seems prudent to issue a few reminders to keep everyone informed. None of these procedures have changed (with the exception of the scrimmage limits once contact begins), but with the massive turnover in coaches and the plethora of inquiries and perhaps spreading of misinformation, these reminders are essential.

06/15/18 – Cheer Competition Clarification/Survey Notes
The staff at the KHSAA has been made aware of a survey that has been distributed to selected cheer coaches regarding a possible new statewide competition to be conducted by the State Coaches Association (KAPOS). It is likely that this survey information is being gathered with input from your coaches that is allegedly representing your school, and you as an athletic administrator are not yet aware. It is also our understanding that this survey has been orchestrated by a small segment of the members of that association and not by the entire Board of Directors of that organization, and as such, athletic administrators should be sure and make comprehensive inquiries about the situation from that organization.

06/14/18 – Dance Postseason Updates
The following reminders are being issued for athletic directors, coaches, participants and fans regarding the postseason for the sport-activity of Dance for the 2018-19 academic year.
- Schools will have from July 15 to October 1 to declare into a specific division for Dance. Following the October 1 declaration by participating schools, there will be sectional competitions held on November 17-18.
- The locations for these sectional competitions will be announced following the declaration date, however, these Dance sectionals shall be held the weekend of November 17.
- Based proportionally on the number of teams competing in each section, a total of 16 teams in each division will advance to the state competition in the following divisions:
- Jazz – Small (7-16 competitors) / Large (17-30 competitors)

06/15/18 – Field Hockey Rules Interp Meeting
In an effort to increase consistency among the Field Hockey coaches and officials with regard to rules interpretation, the KHSAA will offer an in-person meeting July 30, 2018, at Christian Academy of Louisville. This meeting is also open to schools who have an interest in starting a Field Hockey program during this critical three-year trial period established by the Board of Control.
The meeting is set for 6:00 p.m. Please mark your calendars accordingly. You will receive a reminder email with more detailed information as to the exact location. If you cannot attend due to other commitments, please remember your obligation to take the online rules clinic when it is posted in August.

06/13/18- Reminder about Official Ball Revision for Basketball
A second reminder to our schools about the change in basketballs for next season. The ball will remain Spalding, but the adopted ball shifts from a composite ball to a true leather. This was following feedback from a significant portion of the membership, including a recommendation of the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches.
The requirement remains the same, the ball must simply be a Spalding basketball with the NFHS mark on it. However, the specifically named ball which will be provided to the regional tournaments and used in the state tournaments will be the TF-1000 Model 762648 for the boys and the TF-1000 Model 762658 for the girls.

06/12/18 – State Baseball Tournament Concludes This Weekend at Whitaker Bank Ballpark; State Softball Future

The 2018 Whitaker Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament resumes Friday evening with the semifinals at Whitaker Bank Ballpark (6 & 8:30 p.m.), and concludes Saturday night with the championship game at 7 p.m. Tickets for the games are available for purchase through KHSAA.org (http://bit.ly/2LaRDOa).

Hall of Famer Brian Brohm: Multi-sport athlete cover boy

When Brian Brohm was inducted into the Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame a couple months ago, most people remembered him as a mega-star quarterback who led Trinity to three consecutive state football championships.
But he was much more than that.
Brohm was a multi-sport cover boy, an athlete for all seasons, whose last go-around at Trinity was nothing short of spectacular.
“My senior year was very important to me. I wanted to have the best year I could possibly have,” he said last week. “And we pretty much did that. I definitely cherish all those memories.”
Brohm’s versatility earned him national notice. As a junior, he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated (November, 2002) for a story titled “The Vanishing Three-Sport Athlete.”

Jock Sutherland, an irrepressible raconteur, was telling one of his favorite stories, the one about when he was coaching basketball at Lafayette, and one night he ventured onto the court during a game, and the referee told him he was going to assess him a technical foul for every step he took getting back to the bench, so Jock had his players come out and pick him up, but before toting him back to the sidelines they paraded him around the gym while a pep band serenaded them, much to the delight of the fans, and much to the chagrin of the men in the striped shirts.
Sutherland has told this tale, most of which is true, probably 1,000 times. And his audience on this occasion had probably heard it 100 times before. But they still laughed for the 100th time.

The Whitaker Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament (June 7-9, 15-16) gets underway Thursday morning at 11 a.m. when Greenup County takes on Muhlenberg County. The first round of the tournament will be split across Thursday and Friday with four games on each day, followed by four quarterfinal games on Saturday, June 9. The KHSAA has received several inquiries from various parts of the state relative to the potential transferring of student-athletes among and between KHSAA member schools. With the end of the school year upon us, a few reminders concerning the rules and regulations should be highlighted.
- The rules that govern students and their play are made by the member schools. The 280 member schools across the state comprise the KHSAA, not its 14 full-time staff members.
- These rules have been approved as state regulation (therefore having the force of law) and are incorporated by reference as part of 702 KAR 7:065.

‘Triple Threat’ Danville twins Jenna & Lara Akers ‘just like being Admirals’

DANVILLE – If the KHSAA is looking for somebody to promote its “Triple Threat Award”, which recognizes multi-sport athletes who compete in the fall, winter and spring, Jenna and Lara Akers would be perfect ambassadors.
The Danville High School identical twins just finished their freshman year, during which they were actually quadruple threats: they competed in soccer, basketball, swimming and tennis.
If that wasn’t enough, they plan on adding to their sports repertoire next school year by also running cross country and/or track.
“I don’t like sitting around,” Jenna said. “I do like my phone, but I can put it down for sports.”

05/18/18 – Track & Field 2A Championship Postponed to Saturday
Due to current weather conditions and the forecast for the rest of Friday evening, the remainder of the 2A Meet will be postponed until Saturday. The 2A Meet, which was halted at 5:29 p.m. prior to the 100 meter dash, will resume at approximately 4 p.m. (weather permitting) on a rolling schedule. Tickets purchased Friday for the 2A Meet will be honored Saturday with a ticket stub.
The 3A Meet will start as scheduled at 10 a.m., with the 4×800 re-seeded to one heat. The 3A Meet will then proceed on a rolling schedule, weather permitting.

05/18/18- Background and Criteria for Triple Threat Award
In an effort to continue the national emphasis and the KHSAA’s own efforts to de-emphasize sports specialization in the athletic culture, the Commissioner’s office launched the “Triple Threat Award” program in May of 2018 to recognize those students who participate in high school athletics year round.
The award, which is given to student-athletes who participate in a KHSAA sport or sport-activity on the varsity level during each season of the academic year (fall/winter/spring), will be presented to a total of 1,814 student-athletes for 2017-18, and 1,878 student-athletes for 2018-19.
To be considered for the award, the student must compete be on the varsity roster of a sport or sport-activity for a team in each of the three sports seasons. What exactly is the Triennial Survey?
Per the Board of Control adopted policy (https://goo.gl/54F38G ), the Board surveys the member schools every three years to determine interest in sports and sport-activities.
The Board is strong in its feeling that while the Board must decide many issues for the schools, membership desires are extremely critical in this area.
The following are key provisions of the policy:
- The KHSAA shall survey its membership every three (3) years to measure desire for a new offering or elimination of an existing offering.
- The KHSAA Limitation of Seasons shall not address a specific sport or sport-activity unless and until it meets the desired participation threshold to allow for the maximum opportunity to expose the sport to growth.

Recalling Randy Wyatt’s sprint to glory for Paducah Tilghman

Lyman Brown still laughs when he recalls his first encounter with Randy Wyatt.
It was the spring of 1986 and Brown, who had coached Paducah Tilghman to seven consecutive state track and field championships (on his way to 11 in a row), was getting ready for another season.
“Bill Bond was the head track coach at Paducah Middle School and he said, ‘I’ve got this kid I think you can use,’” Brown recounted. “I said, ‘You mean an eighth-grader? Send him over and I’ll see if he can make our freshman relays.’”
A week or so later, when Brown was getting ready to hold time trials before the first meet of the season, he told Bond to send the eighth-grader over so he could take a look at him.

05/16/18 – State Tennis, Track and Field Championships Begin Thursday in Lexington

The 2018 KHSAA State Tennis Championships and the 2018 KHSAA Track and Field State Meet will be contested this weekend in Lexington on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The State Tennis Championships (May 17-19) begin Thursday morning at 8 a.m. with boys’ matches at Shillito Park and the girls’ competition at the UK Boone/Downing Tennis Complex.
All remaining matches will move to the UK Boone/Downing Tennis Complex after the first day, with Friday’s competition starting at 8 a.m. Saturday’s action opens with the boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles semifinals at 9 a.m. Championship matches for boys’ and girls’ doubles are slated for 12 p.m., with the finals for the boys’ and girls’ singles set for 2 p.m.

05/14/18 – Hieneman Named Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year for 2017-18

The second annual Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year program culminated on the campus of Midway University on Monday as Russell High School’s Sara Hieneman (softball) was named the overall winner for 2017-18. Beginning in May of 2017 with the State Bass Fishing Championship, Midway University presented a Female Student-Athlete of the Year award at each of the KHSAA’s 15 girls’ state championship events, with an overall winner selected following the final championship of the timeframe (2018 State Archery).
The Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year award is based upon overall athletic performance (60%), academic achievement (20%) and community service (20%). Students must possess an overall grade point average of 3.0 or better to qualify, and must be academically eligible during the season in which they are nominated. 05/14/18 – New Triple Threat Award Recognizes Three-Season, Multi-Sport Athletes

In an effort to continue the national emphasis and the KHSAA’s own efforts to de-emphasize sports specialization in the athletic culture, the Association recently launched the “Triple Threat Award” program to recognize those students who participate in high school athletics year round.
The award, which is given to student-athletes who participate in a KHSAA sport or sport-activity on the varsity level during each season of the academic year (fall/winters/spring), will be presented to a total of 1,814 student-athletes for 2017-18.
The awards are based solely on each member school’s rosters that were submitted through the KHSAA’s online system, as that is the only permitted determinant for athletic eligibility (including team eligibility).

05/10/18- Football Contract Moratorium, Final Alignment for 2019 to 2022, Scheduling Grid, Cross-Bracketing
At its regular meeting on May 9, 2018, the Board of Control finalized the alignment of teams for the 2019 through 2022 playing seasons. The Board of Control meticulously considered every suggested change and feedback from its February draft during its May 8 work session, and May 9 meeting. The final document reflects any approved change from the original document and it listed at https://khsaa.org/final-approved-alignment-football-2019-through-2022-playing-seasons/
The mandatory scheduling grid for 2019 to 2022 seasons was also adopted. The final week of the season (now numbered week 11) remains a mandatory non-district week. Please be mindful of the scheduling restrictions contained in the grid, particularly when there are issues surrounding fall breaks. 05/10/18 – Board Approves Changes to Dance Championships
The KHSAA Board of Control, at its May Meeting, approved changes to the Dance postseason as well as approved the date and site for the 2018 State Dance Championships.
Following the Oct. 1 declaration by participating schools, there will be four Sectional Competitions (Regions 1-4; 5-8; 9-12; 13-16) to qualify for the State Competition. Based upon the number of teams in each section, an overall total of 16 teams from those sections will advance to the state competition.
The Board approved the elimination of the Kick Division (only two squads entered last year) and will offer championships for the following Divisions:
Jazz – Small (7-16 competitors) / Large (17-30 competitors)
Hip Hop – Small (7-16 competitors) / Large (17-30 competitors)
Pom – Small (7-16 competitors) / Large (17-30 competitors)
The 2018 KHSAA State Dance Championships will be held Saturday, Dec. 15 at Frederick Douglass High School in Lexington.
05/10/18 – Board Finalizes Cheer Postseason
The KHSAA Board of Control, at its May meeting, finalized changes to the structure and advancement to the competitive cheer postseason. To assist in the prevention of automatic qualifiers at Region/State for cheer, the 16 regions will be combined to 8 sectional competitions. Per board action, Regions will be combined accordingly:
1&2; 3&4; 5&6; 7&8; 9&10; 11&12; 13&14; 15&16.
Sections can alternate host sites (Region 1 one year and Region 2 site the next) or choose to have a permanent site based upon facility abilities and availability. The competition rules will stipulate the odd region listed in the alternation table would recommend the region site in the odd year, and the even region in the even year. Sites selected must be able to accommodate the historic crowds, similar to the criteria for the current basketball site selection.

05/09/18 – Board of Control Addresses Football Alignment, Scheduling Grid, Cross Bracketing

The Board of Control conducted its final meeting of the 2017-18 academic year on May 8-9 at the KHSAA offices, addressing several issues related to football along with the postseason for multiple sport-activities.
Following initial review in February, KHSAA staff presented the draft football alignment (2019-22) to the membership for comment. After a lengthy review of feedback and consideration of each change proposed by the membership, the Board approved a final four-year alignment to begin in 2019. With recent change allowing football playing member schools to have two scrimmages regardless of playing season, staff recommended to eliminate the “week 0” terminology from the scheduling grid, as it no longer has an impact on a team’s regular season or scrimmage schedule. 05/09/18 – KHSAA Bass Fishing Championship Begins Friday at Kentucky Dam Marina
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 9, 2018
The sixth-annual KHSAA State Bass Fishing Championship begins Friday morning at the Kentucky Dam Marina when 80 teams compete for the 2018 state title. The two-day KHSAA State Bass Fishing Championship (May 11-12), with Calvert City serving as official host city, begins each morning with the boat launch from Kentucky Dam Marina at 7 a.m. The teams will launch in three flights, with a staggered return to the dock for weigh-ins. The launch order will then be reversed for the second day of the competition.
Teams will start returning to the marina at 3 p.m. each day, with the weigh-ins scheduled to begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. Awards will be presented following day two’s weigh-in to the top four teams along with the big bass award and the Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year award.

The KHSAA is excited to open the nomination process for the Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year among Softball participants for 2017-2018.
This award is based on athletic and academic achievement as well as community service and leadership. The link to the application contains additional criteria and a form to nominate one female participant from each 2017-2018 team. Nominations must come from a member school, but may be submitted by an administrator, guidance counselor, or coach. The KHSAA honored the top officials for 2018 during the Association’s 25th Annual Officials Recognition Banquet today at the Association’s headquarters. The ceremony recognized the finalists for each sport or sport-activity in which the KHSAA licenses officials, as well as the Larry G. Boucher Jr. Supervisor of the Year.
Finalists in each sport were selected through a combination of service to their association and excellence in officiating. One official in each sport was named “Outstanding Official of the Year” for his/her sport in appreciation of their dedication and service to schools and student-athletes across the state. The Association also presented the annual Larry G. Boucher Jr. Supervisor of the Year Award during the ceremony.

Recently, we have had several inquiries regarding the placement of items on the basketball jersey per NFHS rules. Particularly references have been made to professional uniforms and the legality of such uniforms within the NFHS playing rules. One of the responsibilities that parents take most seriously is protecting their children from injury, whether it is buckling seat belts in a car or wearing a helmet while riding a bike. And when their kids become teenagers and want to participate in sports or other activities, parents do everything they can to keep their sons and daughters from getting hurt.
But not all injuries are caused by a twist, fall, collision or accident. Many are caused when young athletes repeat the same athletic activity so often that muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones don’t have time to recover—especially among middle school and high school students. These injuries can end promising careers, cost families tens of thousands of dollars, squash dreams and literally change lives.

The draws for the 2018 Owensboro Health/KHSAA State Softball and 2018 Whitaker Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournaments will take place Thursday, May 3 at 11 a.m. The draw will be conducted at the KHSAA offices and can be viewed live online at KHSAA.tv.
The Whitaker Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament begins with first round and quarterfinal action June 7-9 and will be held at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, home of the Lexington Legends, for the eighth-straight year. The State Baseball Tournament resumes the following weekend with the semifinals and championship game, June 15th and 16th.

05/01/18 – Reminder Multi-Event Athletes, Regional & State Track Meet
We want to remind Athletic Directors and coaches about the strict time schedule at postseason track meets. Throughout the regular season, we realize that many athletes are competing in a rolling schedule style meet. However, both the regional and state track meets are structured to be held to a specific time schedule. With the state meet taking at-large qualifiers, it is important that all 21 regions adhere to a strict time schedule to ensure competitive fairness for the at-large qualifiers attempting to advance to the state meet.
Managers are required to ensure that the regional meets adhere to the posted time schedule. Events cannot start before the published scheduled time. This allows for the same amount of rest for all athletes competing across the state when qualifying for at-large positions. 04/26/18 – Baseball-Softball Minimum Contests For Postseason Requirement
Several schools in both baseball and softball have contacted the office recently to express concerns about the impact this spring’s weather conditions are having on their schedules. While those schools reaching out to our office originally had more than ten (10) contests scheduled, the constant inclement weather conditions this spring have obviously made it difficult to complete those games.
In the competition rules for baseball and softball, there has long been a requirement that in order to be eligible for the postseason a member school must have a schedule of ten (10) or more contests. For those that seek clarification, this doesn’t require ten (10) contests to have been played.
So long as a school is a member eligible for postseason play, they will be eligible for the postseason provided the school had an original schedule of at least ten (10) contests.

04/25/18- Reminder about Football Scrimmages and Contact Restrictions
There have been several inquiries to the office about football scrimmages for 2018 in light of recent action by the KHSAA delegates at the Annual Meeting. Therefore, this additional reminder is being issued.
At that meeting of the delegates, a proposal was passed which would allow all schools to have two (2) pre-season scrimmages in football, regardless of whether or not a week zero (0) game was played. The proposal received the requisite number of votes and has been recommended for implementation by the Board of Control but has not yet received final approval through the regulatory process.
In light of the need for scheduling and planning, we will operate as though the proposal will receive final approval. There is minimal risk of this proposal failing to receive regulatory approval and as such, schools may schedule a second scrimmage for this fall (2018) regardless of first regular season week.

The Mayer/Maile Magic Carpet Ride

Amy Mayer is one happy sports mom/aunt these days, and she almost feels guilty about it.
Her and husband Andy’s sons AJ and Michael were integral players on Covington Catholic’s state championship football and basketball teams.
Her nephew Luke Maile (son of her brother Rich and wife Laurie) is playing some terrific baseball for the Toronto Blue Jays.
And her nephew Jack (Luke’s brother), a football and baseball standout at CovCath, led the Colonels to victory over arch-rival Highlands at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati over the weekend.
“It is all kind of unbelievable,” Amy said. “It’s kind of like, ‘Is this real? Somebody pinch me because I feel like I’m dreaming.’ It’s like we’re overwhelmed with goodness and blessings. It’s almost like a Disney movie.”

04/24/18 – KHSAA State Archery Championships Set For Thursday at KBA

The 2018 KHSAA State Archery Championships get underway Thursday morning at the Kentucky Basketball Academy in Lexington, with the first of six flights starting at 9:30 a.m. The last flight of the day is set for 2:30 p.m., with awards presentations tentatively scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
This year’s state Archery Championship will be the first to award a girls’ team championship, following action taken by the Board of Control in January. The event was previously treated as a coed sport-activity with one overall team championship awarded. Team trophies will be presented to the top four boys’ and top four girls’ teams at this year’s event, with medallions presented to the top five individuals for each gender.

RIP Bill Miller: A most genuine baseball man

Bill Miller, the most genuine baseball man I ever met, passed away Monday. He was 68.
If there is an open acre in Heaven, Miller will turn it into a baseball diamond and be happy hitting fungoes for eternity.
Bill Miller was the baseball coach at Pleasure Ridge Park for nearly four decades, and in that time built the Panthers into the best high school program in Kentucky.
They won six state championships — the first in 1994, the last in 2017 — because Miller was tough and demanding, and as gritty as infield dirt.
His 1,144 victories at PRP stand as a state record, and a tribute to sustained excellence.

Now that the season is in full swing following spring break, the KHSAA will again be using MaxPreps to compile statistical leaders in the sport of softball.
Teams will be required to input their roster into MaxPreps. Rosters entered for statistical purposes are separate and apart from the required roster entry through the KHSAA website for eligibility purposes. Entering for statistics does not relieve the school of required entry on the KHSAA website and student-athletes not on the KHSAA online roster are not eligible to participate (freshman, JV or varsity).
This roster entry can be done by syncing your Game Changer account with your MaxPreps account. Since Game Changer syncs with MaxPreps, schools won’t have any additional data entry if this sync is turned on.

04/19/2018 – Bass Fishing State Tournament Qualifiers
Based upon the entries from each of the four regions, the number of boats advancing from each region will be as follows:
Region One – 17
Region Two – 29
Region Three – 17
Region 4 – 17
While initial registration was done online, coaches and captains are reminded that you can assign up to four anglers to any boat that has been entered into the Regional Tournament. These assignments cannot be changed in between tournaments. The initial assignments made prior to the region must be the same anglers assigned to that boat for the state tournament should that boat advance. The assignments can be made on site at the Regional Tournament.
Coaches and captains are also reminded to bring the signed Release of Liability forms to the Regional Tournament as well. The form can be located by going to the following link:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 19, 2018
Statistical leaders for baseball and softball will once again be available at KHSAA.org through the Association’s continued partnership with MaxPreps. Reports will be automatically generated every morning from data entered by member schools through MaxPreps and Game Changer.
Member schools are solely responsible for submitting statistical information. The KHSAA has no involvement in the collection or maintenance of stats for baseball or softball, and all corrections should be directed to MaxPreps and/or the team in question.
If a school or individual is omitted from the stat leaders report, or information is not current, that means the team in question did not update its statistics prior to that morning’s automated update (4 a.m. ET). More information on entering stats through MaxPreps and Game Changer can be found at http://bit.ly/2JUwjMV.
