01/28/13 – Board of Control Approves Basketball Region I, Statewide Wrestling Realignments
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 28, 2013
The KHSAA Board of Control approved new alignments for Basketball Region I and all eight Wrestling regions during its January meeting at the KHSAA office on Monday.
Following the consolidation of schools in McCracken County, KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett and area Board of Control members met with representatives from the first region in Mayfield. With all Region I schools in attendance, the feedback from the meeting was to realign within the region, and not bring additional teams into the region. Three options for realignment were presented following the meeting in Mayfield. On Monday, the Board voted to approve Option A for the 20013-14 season (detailed below), which will also be applied to baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball:
District 1 – Carlisle County, Fulton City, Fulton County, Hickman County
District 2 – Ballard Memorial, Graves County, Mayfield
District 3 – Community Christian, McCracken County, Paducah Tilghman, St. Mary
[…]1/28/13 – Competitive Cheer to be One Class in 2013-14
The KHSAA Board of Control, at its January meeting, eliminated the two class format system with regard to competitive cheer beginning with the 2013-14 school year.
Squad divisions will continue to be the following in the all-girls category: Small (6-12); Medium (13-16); Large (17-20); Super-Large (21-24).
Coed will be offered with a minimum of 6 (two boys/four girls or four boys/two girls) and maximum of 24, of which at least two shall be boys.
This action comes based upon participation by the membership during the 2012-2013 school year. There were over 104 divisions within the two class, five division system, that either had no entry in a division (50) or just had one squad (54), creating an automatic qualifier (providing successful regional participation) to the state competition.

12/6/12 – Cheer Squads by Division Listing
Please note the competitive cheer division listing has been revised and posted on the KHSAA website. Adjustments were made based upon documented human error by Athletic/School administration in completing the survey or failure to initially respond. Adjustments were not (and will not be) considered due to injuries or other changes in squad size. Schools will compete in the division at both Region and State as listed.
http://khsaa.org/cheer/regionbyregiondivisions.pdf
Also, please note that Region 9 has voted and requested to the KHSAA that the Regional Competition be moved from Montgomery County to Conner High School. This request has been approved with the competition date remaining Jan. 19.
11/19/12 – Cheer Rosters Entry Online
This is a reminder to cheer coaches to check with your Athletic Director to make sure your cheer team rosters are entered online through the KHSAA website. We ask that rosters be entered by Dec. 1 as we prepare for regional competitions. Please have any individual that could represent your school entered online (in the event you want to switch out a member due to injury, etc.). Rosters will be locked down Dec. 15 and no names may be added. If you are entering two teams in competition, make sure all names are entered. Athletic Directors enter cheer rosters the same as any other roster – using the “Schools Log-in” link on the KHSAA website.
11/6/12 – Participation Survey Deadline Nov. 15
This is a reminder to Competitive Cheer coaches and Administrators. The Commissioner sent out a notice to Athletic Directors and Principals a survey whereby schools are required to designate participation in the upcoming KHSAA Competitive Cheer postseason. Coaches should communicate with the Administrators to make sure the survey has been responded to correctly. This final survey will be binding and schools will required to compete in the division in the postseason based upon the response. Deadline is Nov. 15.
Also, a reminder that out-of-state travel must be sanctioned by the KHSAA. You can submit your request by e-mail to bcope@khsaa.org. Please included date, site, host and official name of event.

As we have previously published and shared in the rules clinics, travel out of state is to be approved/sanctioned by the KHSAA office. Schools may simply e-mail (bcope@khsaa.org) the information which should include the date, site, host and name of competition. Schools travelling out of state are required to participate in the KHSAA region/state competitions and adhere to NFHS Rules in those out of state travel competitions.
10/2/12 – Clarification on Cheer Squads and Exhibitions/Showcases
We had received an inquiry concerning Cheer squads participating in showcases and does this count toward the season limitation of 3 competitions. Here is the interpretation on involvement:
Squads may participate in Showcases/Exhibitions if the involvement is merely to have the routine judged. If any type of awards (dance medals, jump awards, etc.) are presented this is considered a competition and would count toward your three limit.
Please contact the KHSAA office with any questions.
9/13/12 – Squad Competition Requirements for Out-Of-State Travel
We have received questions regarding the requirement of participation in the KHSAA Region/State Competitions in order to have out-of-state travel sanctioned and approved by our office. Below is a Q/A that should help address the situation. However, always feel free to contact our office on any competitive cheer question.
Q – Both our Junior Varsity and Varsity squads seek out-of-state travel sanction/approval by KHSAA. Do both squads have to compete in the KHSAA postseason (Region and State) to meet the requirement?
A – The Varsity squad is required to participate in the KHSAA Region/State for any travel (Varsity or Junior Varsity) to be approved/sanctioned by the KHSAA Office.
For Example: Varsity School A participates in both KHSAA Region and State, then both Junior Varsity and Varsity would be meet the requirement and be eligible for out-of-state travel to be sanction/approved by the KHSAA.
9/4/12 – Make-Up Judge’s Training Session Scheduled
The KHSAA will conduct its final Competitive Cheer Judge’s Training Session on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. at Thomas Nelson High School in Bardstown. For those who have not yet attended a session, the late fee is $50 will be charged. Anyone that has previously attended a training and wants to retake the course there is no charge, however registration is required. Go to the link below for additional information.

8/29/12 – Clarification on Braced Forward/Backward Flips in Pyramid
We received a clarification from NFHS regarding braced forward/backward flips in a pyramid. In three of the four judges training sessions, the question was with regard to 2.5.7 and does each bracer have to have a separate spotter. The bracer in the middle can brace 2 flips and still be considered a separate spotter for each side. Below is an example of the question we received and at the time, it was interpreted that it would not be legal. Upon the clarification, this is permitted and legal.
8/29/12 – Clarification on Asphalt Surfaces
While conducting our Cheer Judge’s Training ….there was a slide within the NFHS Rules Clinic (including the online) ….that appeared to in conflict. Since, we have received the following interpretation from the NFHS one the Points of Emphasis with regard to surfaces:
The beginning statement “Technical skills should not be performed on concrete, asphalt, wet or uneven surfaces or surfaces with obstructions” appears to be in conflict with the next sentence which talks to single twists to a cradle or twisting during quick tosses (which would both be considered technical skills) and indicates that they are not limited grass, mats or rubberized tracks. What the paragraph is attempting to say is:
Because of the characteristics of hard surfaces like concrete and asphalt, technical skills should not be performed on these surfaces. In addition, technical skills should not be performed on wet or uneven surfaces or surfaces with obstructions as these surfaces are not […]
08/16/12 – NFHS Responds to 2nd Circuit Court Affirmation in Quinnipiac Case
The Second Circuit Court of Appeals has affirmed the District Court’s decision in Biediger vs. Quinnipiac University. In significant part, the appellate court accepted the lower court’s finding that cheerleading, as it was conducted at Quinnipiac University, was not a sport for purposes of meeting Title IX requirements.
