12/22/17 – 2018 Baseball Umpire Advance Camp – Save the Date
Mark your calendars for the 2018 KHSAA Baseball Umpires Advanced Camp which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Johnson Central High School in Paintsville. Advanced Camp attendance is required once every four years for postseason eligibility.
Registration information will be available soon, but we wanted umpires to save the date if attendance will be needed.
The camp fee will again be $50 for an early registration period and then $75 for late registration. The tentative schedule will have registration beginning at 8 a.m. and the camp concluding at 4 p.m.
Attendance at Officiate Kentucky Day back in July met the requirement of the Advanced Camp. Those that registered and attended OKD have received credit to their accounts.

12/19/17 – Initial Basketball Stat Leaders Report Released
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 19, 2017
The first statistical leader reports of the 2017-18 season for girls’ and boys’ basketball have been posted at KHSAA.org. Where in the past the statistical leader reports had been compiled on a weekly basis, the reports will now be updated every day at approximately 3 a.m., allowing for more current and up-to-date information.
Statistical entry is required of all member schools, and those failing to meet the requirement to enter stats are subject to penalties from the Commissioner, including fines and other actions within the constraints of Bylaw 27. Member schools are solely responsible for submitting statistical information. If a school or individual is omitted, or information is not updated, that means the team in question did not update its statistics through the KHSAA’s online system prior to the deadline.
Based upon recommendations from the Basketball Advisory Committee, the fine for schools not in compliance was doubled last season, […]
Remembering Joey Couch, the basketball player
BY MIKE FIELDS (Dec. 16, 2017)
Joey Couch, who passed away at home Friday night at the age of 49, was known to most people for his football playing days at the University of Kentucky, where he earned All-SEC honors.
But I remember Joey Couch better for his basketball playing days at Paintsville High School.
He did help Paintsville football, coached by Walter Brugh, to a Class A runner-up finish to Crittenden County in 1985.
But Couch got more state-wide exposure in hoops as a major contributor for the basketball Tigers, who played in the Sweet Sixteen in 1985, ’86 and ’87.
Over those three years, Couch averaged a double-double — 13.2 points and 10.2 rebounds — in Paintsville’s six state tournament games in Rupp Arena.
John Pelphrey got most of the headlines for those Bill Mike Runyon Tigers. Pelphrey was named Mr. Basketball after his senior season and went on to be part of […]

12/12/17-Applications Being Accepted for Louis Stout Memorial Scholarships
When former Commissioner Louis Stout passed away in 2012, his widow Anna directed that donations on his behalf go to the Louis Stout Memorial Fund for Students. She felt this was a chance for the KHSAA to honor student-athletes who excel in athletics, academics, school service and community service. The award process for 2017-2018 is now underway.
Applications are being accepted for students to apply for those awards through Friday, January 19, 2018. The award winners will be announced in conjunction with the boys’ state basketball tournament in March. Two grants, each in the amount of a one-time scholarship of $2,000 payable to an institution of higher learning, will be awarded. The scholarship is not renewable and is not endowed for expansion. Minimum criteria is a 3.5 (converted to 4.0 scale) grade point average; involvement in varsity sports or sport-activities; involvement in other school activities, a record of community service/involvement and a member of the […]
12/12/17-Schools Requested to Submit Form GE81 for Future Offerings
Every three years, per adopted policy, the KHSAA surveys the membership as to the desire to expand and/or continue sports and sport-activity offerings. In this manner, the staff and Board of Control can continue to be pro-active in terms of offering new opportunities and assess the satisfaction of its membership with the current offerings.
Please complete the required survey at https://schools.khsaa.org/ge81-khsaa-triennial-sports-offering-survey-2017-2018/ on or before Friday, January 5, 2018, to assist in the determination of future offerings by the Association. This survey will help determine the sports or sport-activities offered by the Association in which your school would likely participate if the KHSAA were to begin or continue sponsoring championship play.
You will need to be logged in to the KHSAA school subdomain to complete the survey and should be requested to login by clicking on the link. To access the survey, click the link in the email or blog post, or login to the school system at https://schools.khsaa.org/, and click on KHSAA Forms and Reports, […]
Christmas will have a championship ring to it for the Hellyers
BY MIKE FIELDS (Dec. 8, 2017)
The Brothers Hellyer of Boyle County will have a big time talking smack and patting each other on the back when their family gathers for Christmas in a couple weeks.
And the youngest of the Hellyer boys, Clete, will no doubt be in the middle of it all now that he’s joined his brothers’ championship club.
When Boyle County beat Corbin in the Class 3A football finals last week, it capped an incredible run of eight (!) state titles for the Hellyer family.
Clay Hellyer, a wide receiver/defensive back, was part of Chuck Smith’s championship teams in 2001, 2002 and 2003.
Cole Hellyer, an offensive lineman, helped Larry French’s Rebels win titles as a junior and senior in 2009 and 2010.
Clint Hellyer, a wide receiver/defensive back, was a freshman and sophomore on those same championship teams.
Clete Hellyer, a defensive lineman/linebacker, finally got his turn to celebrate […]

12/06/17- Football Schools Required to Submit Spring Practice Date Options
Per KHSAA Bylaw 23, each school must submit its spring practice dates on or before December 15, 2017, for the spring, 2018 spring practice period. Failure to submit these dates by December 15 will result in the school not being permitted to conduct spring practice. This deadline is to be rigidly enforced for 2017-18 so do not delay in submitting.
Once submitted, these dates cannot be changed. There will be NO extensions due to coaching vacancies, etc. The selection of spring practice is solely a function of the school calendar and not personnel.
THE SETTING OF THESE DATES IS A FUNCTION OF SCHOOL CALENDAR AND NOT PERSONNEL.
Go to this link —

Winning football titles is a family tradition at Danville
BY MIKE FIELDS (Dec. 2, 2017)
Winning football is a family tradition spanning generations at Danville High School, and the Admirals’ family is celebrating another championship today.
Danville won its 11th state title by beating familiar foe Mayfield 35-21 in the Class 2A finals Saturday afternoon in front of 7,398 fans at Kroger Field.
Thirty years ago, the Admirals beat Mayfield 24-23 in overtime in the 2A title game. David Walker was one of Danville’s heroes, scoring a TD in the extra period, then blocking Mayfield’s extra-point kick to seal that victory.
Saturday afternoon, David Walker’s son, also named David, helped the Admirals beat Mayfield in the finals again. He was Danville’s second-leading receiver and second-leading tackler in helping secure the school’s first state title since 2003.
“My dad just always believed in me, that I’d come to a state championship and win one,” Walker said. “It’s good to fulfill that legacy. He told me […]
Boyle County & Chuck Smith a championship combo
BY MIKE FIELDS (Dec. 1, 2017)
Reese Smith, one of the brightest stars in Boyle County’s 40-21 victory over Corbin in the Class 3A football finals Friday night, is no relation to Rebels’ coach Chuck Smith.
But the sophomore wide receiver/free safety, who accounted for four touchdowns in Boyle County’s rousing win in front of 11,234 at UK’s Kroger Field, has known his coach for a long time.
“When I was a little kid, maybe when I was in the fourth grade, he was coaching here at UK and I’d come up here to (football) camps,” Reese said. “I’d wear a Boyle County shirt and he got to know who I was. So when he came back to Boyle County, it was kind of cool because he knew I was, and I knew that he’d won five state titles in a row there, and I knew he’d get us back on track.”
Reese Smith wasn’t […]

Reflections on Bourbon County’s championship season, 20 years later
BY MIKE FIELDS (Nov. 29, 2017)
When Bourbon County captured the Class 2A title in 1997, it was regarded as one of the most improbable football championships in state history. The Colonels hadn’t had a winning record in a decade, and had NEVER won a playoff game before Dudley Hilton took over as their coach in mid-summer 20 years ago.
Bourbon County posted a 7-3 record in the regular season before embarking on a remarkable run through the post-season. After slipping by Somerset 15-12 in the first round of the playoffs, the Colonels registered consecutive shutouts against Boyle County (24-0), Lexington Catholic (20-0) and Lawrence County (14-0). They capped things off by beating Owensboro Catholic 39-28 in the finals on a bitter-cold night at Louisville’s Cardinal Stadium.
Two decades later, I was curious to hear some of the key players on that Bourbon County team reminisce about their championship season.
They were teenagers then. They’re in […]

11/16/17- 2017 Wrestling Rules Clarifications Including Experimental Weigh-in
To further our efforts in communications across the wrestling community, we have developed this post as a list of questions that have come to the staff from both Coaches and Officials concerning this year’s playing rules. As new questions arise, we will update this post for everyone’s clarification.
As an experimental rule, the Association wanted to address the possible problem of weigh-ins for female wrestlers when the Officials’ assigned to the match along with the Coaching staffs and event management are all male. To help give some relief to this situation, we are experimenting with an alternative weigh-in procedure. This is not intended as a rule change for all weigh-ins, but a means to accommodate those special situations that might arise that make the standard procedure difficult from a management perspective.
The following are questions that have been submitted, along with our interpretation of the Experimental Weigh-in Rule for Females when no females in tournament […]
11/16/17 – Board of Control Addresses Future Basketball Calendar, Regional Alignment and State Advancement
For Immediate Release: November 16, 2017
The Board of Control conducted a regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Wednesday morning, during which time it addressed a future basketball scheduling conflict, the placement of a new school in 2018-19 and revised state qualifying in two championships.
With a facility conflict pending at Rupp Arena in 2021 due to the venue hosting first round games of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, an adjustment to the basketball calendar was necessary to accommodate the Sweet 16®. In addition, the girls’ basketball tournament was previously awarded to Rupp Arena in 2019 and 2020, with an option to extend to 2021 and 2022.
Based upon recommendation from staff, the Board approved a proposal to shift the start of the basketball season forward one week, for the 2020-21 season only, and adjust the corresponding dates calendar accordingly. The Commissioner was also authorized to begin […]

11/10/17- Special Activities in Conjunction with NCAA Field Hockey in Louisville
During the 2016-17 school year, the Board of Control approved an extension of the KHSAA sponsorship of Field Hockey for a three-year period. During this period, the current participating teams were charged with promotion of the sport and attempting to measure its growth within the membership. The current participating schools have done an admirable job and have offered to come to different parts of the state and do instructional clinics, answer questions, and show the value of this sport that has been played in our state for more than fifty years and represents an opportunity for increased participation by female students.
In addition to these efforts, we are excited to promote three additional opportunities to expand knowledge about this sport in conjunction with the NCAA Field Hockey Championship Games being held in Louisville the weekend of November 18 and 19 in events co-sponsored by USA Field Hockey, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, the Kentucky […]
Record-setting QB Bill Allen ‘amazed’ at numbers that passed him by
BY MIKE FIELDS (Nov. 10, 2017)
When Bill Allen happened upon the lists of state football records on the KHSAA web site recently, he was stunned by some of the numbers he saw.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” he said. “Some of the stats were just amazing.”
Allen was particularly interested in the passing records.
After all, he was the Courier-Journal’s first-team All-State quarterback in 1983, and finished his career at Morgan County as the state’s all-time leader in passing yards (6,440). He also ranked near the top in completions (443), attempts (800) and touchdown passes (42).
But 34 years later, Allen’s numbers have been left in the dust.
Kentucky high school football became a high-flying passing game for a lot of teams in the 1990s, and it’s been airborne ever since.
Allen thinks the change happened in large part because UK coach Hal Mumme unleashed his Air Raid offense, and Leslie County […]
11/09/17- Bylaw 9 Rulings
Recently, the ruling officer for Bylaw 9 handed down sanctions to student-athletes from Lafayette, Frederick Douglass, Scott County, Montgomery County and South Laurel after school administrators proactively self-reported violations to the Association. The violations centered around an organized basketball contest involving students in member schools after the start of school but prior to the first day of allowable practice.
The KHSAA enforces the rules its membership approves, and though the event in question resulted in a minimal penalty (a one-game suspension) for the participating student-athletes, the Bylaw 9 violation is hardly unique to this specific event. Several other events in various parts of the state resulted in similar sanctions as required by the rule. Despite the constant education efforts of Association staff, this situation could have easily been avoided had adjustments been made to the event’s format, setup and participant composition. The rule is well known to the athletes, member school coaches, member school athletic […]
11/08/17- High School Playoff Games Again Asked to Honor Veterans at Week 2 Games
Every high school hosting a KHSAA football playoff game is again asked to honor all veterans and active duty military at events near Veteran’s Day. This is a great way to recognize our veterans and active duty military and hopefully reinforce the importance of their sacrifices and the meaning of Veteran’s Day. The KHSAA is grateful to be able to participate again during 2017.
For the second round of the football playoffs at home sites November 10, each host school is asked to request all veterans and active duty military in attendance to stand and be recognized for their contributions.
The KHSAA is certainly proud to be a part of this recognition and hopeful that this simple acknowledgment will convey a powerful message of thanks on the part of the school and the community in general.

Allen Feldhaus Sr.’s wonderful basketball life
BY MIKE FIELDS (Nov. 2, 2017)
Allen Feldhaus Sr., who died Saturday at age 77, had a wonderful basketball life.
The Boone County native played for Adolph Rupp at Kentucky.
He coached the high school game at Russell County and Mason County, and guided the Royals to four 10th Region titles, and a Sweet Sixteen runner-up in 1981.
He coached his three sons – Allen Jr., Willie and Deron – and all three got to play for Mason County in the state tournament under the bright lights in Rupp Arena.
Allen Jr. and Willie followed in their dad’s footsteps into coaching.
In his 20th season at Madison Central, Allen Jr. led the Indians to the state championship in 2013. (Allen Sr. and Allen Jr. are the only father and son to serve as head coach in the KHSAA state finals.)
Willie first coached at Pendleton County before assisting his brother at Madison Central for 11 years. From there he returned to […]

10/29/17 – State Cross Country Qualifiers
The Regional results for Cross Country and the KHSAA State Qualifiers have been posted on the KHSAA website. It is important that coaches review the Roster by School immediately. Please contact the KHSAA at xcresults@khsaa.org with any corrections (name spellings, grade levels, etc).
For new coaches: Once a student-athlete (or team) is entered into the region they are automatically entered into the state meet if they qualify. Even if your team did not qualify, you may have had an individual that did qualify. Please check the link provided to see if this might be the case. It is the roster by school that tells you if your student-athletes qualified for the state meet.
To see the school-by-school roster and performance listing, click on this link http://khsaa.org/sports/fall/cross-country/, then scroll down to the headings Cross Country Tournament Results and choose the 2017 KHSAA State/Region Results/Entries dropdown menu, then choose the appropriate class, then choose 2017 […]

RIP, Daniel Webb — Heath baseball star; major leaguer
BY MIKE FIELDS (Oct. 16, 2017)
It was sad to hear that Daniel Webb, a star pitcher at Heath High School who went on to play in the major leagues, died over the weekend from injuries sustained in an ATV accident in Tennessee. He was 28.
Webb pitched in relief for the Chicago White Sox from 2013-16, registering a 7-5 record, appearing in 94 games and posting a 4.50 ERA in 110 innings. He had Tommy John surgery in 2016 and was released after the season.
I remember Webb for his gutsy performance for Heath in the 2007 KHSAA State Tournament at Applebee’s Park (now Whitaker Bank Ballpark) in Lexington.
A hard-throwing right-hander, Webb injured his foot in the first inning of Heath’s quarterfinal game against Apollo. He played through the pain, however, and wound up pitching a complete game, racking up 10 strikeouts. He also drove in Heath’s only run with a sacrifice fly, but Apollo eked out […]

2017 KHSAA State Tournament Results/Stats
2017 Regular Season Information 2017 State Results and InformationSo far, so good for CovCath football’s 50th anniversary
BY MIKE FIELDS (Oct. 12, 2017)
Covington Catholic’s 50th anniversary of its varsity football program is going quite nicely, thank you.
The Colonels kicked off the season by dedicating renovated Dennis Griffin Stadium, a $2.6 million project that included new stands, press box, artificial turf, and permanent lighting for the first time.
Since then CovCath has steamrolled its way to a 7-0 record (by an average score of 40-8) and earned the No. 1 perch in the Courier-Journal’s Litratings.
In A.J. Mayer, the Colonels may have the best quarterback in the state, a guy who could lead them to a seventh state championship, and the first undefeated season in school history.
On Friday night, when CovCath plays host to northern Kentucky nemesis Highlands, it will continue to celebrate the program’s 50th anniversary. The Colonels’ six state title teams, as well as their 1967 team, will be honored during post-game festivities.
Former coach Lynn Ray, the man most responsible for building the Colonels into a […]
