In mid-May, USA Cheer, along with Varsity Spirit, sent out emails to competitive cheer coaches concerning music copyrights. Since that time, staff has had the opportunity to review and discuss the information that was published, including discussions with counsel.
The purpose of the communication was two-fold. First off, it reminds our schools, coaches, and choreographers of the copyright laws and use of music; and secondly, it provides a listing of providers to help guide you through copyright issues.
The Association purchases an ASCAP license for its State Championships. This purchase by the KHSAA does not include usage by individual schools who must adhere to the copyright laws regarding the use of music.
We are posting below the information USA Cheer and Varsity Spirit published in the event our coaches did not receive the information. Please review the following links for more information:

For the other fall sports/sport-activities (Soccer, Golf, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Cross Country, Competitive Cheer), the first official practice date is July 15. Only after these dates can anything mandatory be required of team members or potential team members.
Until the day following the last day of school or May 31 (whichever is earliest), coaches are permitted to provide instruction and be involved with team members (provided such is approved by the principal), but continue to be restricted in “competitive” situations with other schools unless they are […]

KHSAA Advisory Committee members will be conducting a Regional meeting to set the date/site for each regional event. The Board approved the second weekend of December as the date and Alltech Arena as the site also for 2014 and 2015. Securing a site where a traditional, yearly, corresponding date for State was key in the decision to allow for schools to schedule regional events and assist with those that travel out of state.

04/15/13 – Board of Control Approves Moving KHSAA Sweet 16® Finals To Sunday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 15, 2013
After reviewing the 2013 KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16®, the Board of Control voted today in favor of a proposal to move the championship games of the boys’ and girls’ Sweet 16® to Sunday starting in 2014. The format change allows for the semifinals to be conducted as a standalone event on Saturday, and gives the participants more time to prepare and recuperate leading up to the championship game.
“We examined the format of our basketball tournaments from a number of different perspectives, and in the end, felt like it was time to move the championship game to Sunday. Separating the championship game from the semifinals, really makes an event out of the Saturday games for those final four teams,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “We think the added rest leading up to the championship game will not only benefit the health and safety of the students, it […]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 28, 2013

Three options for realignment were presented following the meeting in Mayfield. On Monday, the Board voted to approve Option A for the 20013-14 season (detailed below), which will also be applied to baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball:

[…]1/28/13 – Competitive Cheer to be One Class in 2013-14
The KHSAA Board of Control, at its January meeting, eliminated the two class format system with regard to competitive cheer beginning with the 2013-14 school year.
Squad divisions will continue to be the following in the all-girls category: Small (6-12); Medium (13-16); Large (17-20); Super-Large (21-24).
Coed will be offered with a minimum of 6 (two boys/four girls or four boys/two girls) and maximum of 24, of which at least two shall be boys.
This action comes based upon participation by the membership during the 2012-2013 school year. There were over 104 divisions within the two class, five division system, that either had no entry in a division (50) or just had one squad (54), creating an automatic qualifier (providing successful regional participation) to the state competition.
