Football was one of 12 offerings to show an increase from the previous year, breaking a trend of declining participation for the last three years by adding 202 new student-athletes [freshmen, JV, varsity] during the 2019-20 season to remain the state’s most popular sport with 13,277 rostered participants.
“The continued rise in student-athlete participation the last three years emphasizes the importance of school-based athletics in the fabric of the educational experience for these young adults,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “The importance of these coach-to-student and student-to-student relationships is only amplified in these uncertain times, as we strive […]

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 14, 2020) — Providing more clarity on a proper race finish and official timing procedures are among the noteworthy high school swimming and diving rules changes for the 2020-21 school year.
These topics were among those discussed by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Swimming and Diving Rules Committee at its annual meeting March 22-23, where a total of six rules changes were recommended for approval. The rules meeting was held in an online format to comply with current health safety guidelines. All recommendations were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
Rule 1-1-1 was edited to profile the end wall in more detail. Previously described as “the walls perpendicular to the race course,” the new definition broadens the term to include “the vertical portion of the pool, contiguous surface of the deck and overflow gutter, the front of the starting block or platform, or the touchpad at […]

As of now and through at least May 1, all activity by rostered participants, coaches and those who have participated in at least one practice session for a middle or high school remain shut down as do all athletic facilities in control of our membership. 11/19/19 – Board Reviews Fall Sports Championships and Ongoing Operations
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 19, 2019
The Board of Control conducted a lengthy review of the recently completed fall sports and each respective championship, while also discussing ongoing operations and issues during the course of its meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Tuesday. Among the actionable items in the meeting, the Board addressed the format of the Swimming & Diving postseason meets and the future placement for Sayre football.
Over the last few years, staff received multiple requests to restructure region diving competitions due in part to facility issues and a shortage of qualified judges without a connection to a specific school. The situation was exacerbated by the expansion to 40 qualifiers in the state diving competition, with 22 at-large participants potentially leading to competitive issues if there is a perception that the judges are not consistent and objective at each meet.
Following a survey of the membership, 75% of respondents voted in favor of […]

04/22/19 – Six Rules Changes Approved in High School Swimming, Diving
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 22, 2019) — Effective with the 2019-20 high school season, a legal finish now requires the competitor to contact either the touchpad or the finish end coinciding with the individual stroke of the race. With this change, swimmers can legally complete a race by touching the finish end (end wall), regardless of whether the touchpad is activated.
This rules revision, which affects the finish of all strokes used in swimming, was one of two swimming and four diving changes recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Swimming and Diving Rules Committee at its March 24-26 meeting in Indianapolis. All recommendations were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
Rule 8-1-7 now will require swimmers to contact the finish end in the manner prescribed by the individual strokes. Descriptions of the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle finishes in Rule 8-2 state that a legal finish requires contact with […]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 16, 2019
In its first meeting of the new year on Wednesday at the KHSAA Offices, the Board of Control finalized locations for two spring championships while addressing the future playoff structure for football and continuing its research for future revisions to state golf.
Following last year’s action by the Board to transition the state softball tournament from a double-elimination format to single elimination, create an eight-team state tournament and a semi-state round, KHSAA staff sent out information to prospective cities interested in hosting the event. After reviewing information and options from both Lexington and Louisville, the Board approved a recommendation to award the 2019 and 2020 State Softball Championships to the University of Kentucky’s John Cropp Stadium.

11/14/18 – Board of Control Adjusts 2019 Fall Seasons, Sets State Championship Sites
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Nov. 14, 2018
During the course of its meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Wednesday, the Board of Control made adjustments to the 2019 fall sports seasons and finalized sites for this year’s State Baseball and Swimming & Diving Championships.
For the last several years prior to 2018, the soccer, volleyball and cross country seasons all culminated on the same weekend. With volleyball moving a week earlier in 2018 to avoid a conflict in Louisville with the Breeders’ Cup, the Association had the opportunity to reevaluate the structure of its seasons while also looking to alleviate concerns with competitions on ACT test dates.
With those factors in mind, the Board approved a recommendation to set the start of the 2019 Soccer regular season to begin in NFHS Week 6 (8/11-8/17) and end with the final regular season week in NFHS Week 13 (9/29-10/5). […]

09/25/18 – Board of Control Addresses Future Championship Formats and Schedules in Several Sports
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 25, 2018
The Board of Control conducted its first meeting of the 2018-19 academic year on Thursday, September 20 at the Association offices. Much of the day’s agenda involved ongoing discussion of the future format of several KHSAA championships. Among the action taken, the Board gave tentative approval to transitioning the State Softball and Baseball Tournaments to 8-team single elimination events, with the key provision of re-establishing semi-state play, preferably at non-high school sites. This builds upon last year’s decision to move away from the double-elimination format in Softball, in the interest of player safety and gender participation experience equity.
The tentative plan would transition these championships to 8-team events with first round, semi-state games, rotated in geographic pods and played at a neutral site. The Commissioner and staff were directed to develop site criteria for semi-state games for review at October’s Board meeting, with the goal to […]

During its regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Wednesday, the Board of Control approved a proposal to add Unified and Adapted opportunities in the sport-activity of Bowling, beginning with the 2017 state championship. 2/24/16 – Swimming and Diving Starting Block wedges
The KHSAA administered a survey to participating member school designated representatives (normally the school AD) regarding the use of starting block wedges at the state swimming and diving meet for 2016. The purpose of this survey was to receive feedback from schools participating in the state meet to determine whether or not their athletes had had the opportunity to utilize these wedges during the season and whether or not they would be in favor of allowing their use at the state meet.
Only 25 of the schools with a swimming program had utilized these wedges in the past with only 34 total schools in favor of utilizing them at the state meet. Especially critical in the information gathering process was the fact that several coaches expressed concern about their athletes lack of familiarity with the blocks and the potential competitive disadvantage their athletes would be placed in by trying to familiarize themselves with these wedges. In […]
2/24/16 – State Swimming and Diving Weather Information
The 2016 KHSAA Swimming and Diving State meet is currently set to proceed on schedule. However, if due to the severe weather on Thursday there is a need to delay or adjust the schedule, changes will be posted online on the KHSAA website and via the @khsaa and @khsaaevents twitter accounts.
Based on the actual weather that occurs, we will decide between leaving the meet on schedule or one of several contingency plans that could include diving preliminaries later into Thursday or even after the swimming sessions on Friday, or several other alternatives. Nothing will be determined until we actually determine accurate weather conditions.
We understand the need for each local school and school district to make safety the number one priority in regards to transporting their student-athletes and that there is the remote possibility that some will choose not to travel even if the meet continues as scheduled. We encourage you to always make those safety-based decisions. […]

01/28/16 – Board of Control Addresses Football Alignment, Bracketing; Baseball Pitch Count; Swimming and Diving State Qualifiers
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 28, 2016
The Board of Control addressed a lengthy agenda during its regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Thursday, approving a slight “midcourse” adjustment to the football alignment as required by the competition rules and future football playoff bracket formats, finalizing a baseball pitch count, and settling on the number of regional qualifiers for the state swimming and diving meet for 2016.
Per the football competition rules, a “midcourse” adjustment is to be made in the second year of a four-year alignment. In order to be considered for adjustment, the four-year average enrollment (including 2015-16 data) would have to be within the boundaries of another class, and the school shall have had at least a 10 percent change in four-year average enrollment during the two-year period.
Upon review of the data, only two schools fit the criteria to be placed into a different class, and the Board unanimously approved the movement of […]
01/28/16 – Swimming and Diving Region 8 Meet Location Change
Due to the expansion of regions from five to nine for the 2015-2016 Swimming and Diving season, plans were made for the Region 8 Swim Meet to be held at the Falling Springs Arts and Recreation Center in Versailles to decrease the amount of travel for schools in this region.
Several schools in this region had expressed a strong interest in returning to the Stivers Wellness and Aquatic Center in Barbourville, KY for the swimming portion of the Region 8 meet. The KHSAA sent a survey to the Designated Representatives from each school in this region asking them to consult their head coaches in regards to which facility they wanted to serve as the host for the swimming portion of the Region 8 meet.
The overwhelming majority of administrators (19-4) voted for the swimming portion of the Region 8 meet to return to the Stivers Aquatic and Wellness Center. As a result, the swimming portion of the Region […]

01/15/16 – Number of State Qualifiers Increased for Swimmers at State Meet
When the realignment of swimming schools was revised last summer, one of the discussion points was about state qualifiers. At that time, with 9 regions, the Board of Control approved bringing two automatic qualifiers from each region, and an additional 14 statewide at-large qualifiers for a competition field of 32 in each event.
Since the adoption of the alignment, staff and tournament management has worked diligently with the time schedule to try and address issues where the Board wanted to see if it was possible to not reduce the number of at-large qualifiers from prior years (when 22 at-large made the field plus two automatic from each region).
At this point, the schedule has been adjusted to the point that the Swimming and Diving Advisory Committee recommended, and the Board of Control has approved, bringing in the 18 automatic qualifiers (two per region) and 22 at large for each swimming event. Therefore, the number of state qualifiers in […]

2/21/15 – On Deck Access for Coaches
In order to continue to address the concerns of the University Fire Marshal for the 2015 Swimming and Diving State Championships, teams with ten or more swimmers (boys and girls combined) will be allowed to have three coaches on the deck of the pool. Any team with less than ten swimmers (boys and girls combined) will be allowed to have two. The required credential to be on the deck will be a wristband. There will be a different color wristband for each day and they will be in the team packets for coaches to pick up during team check-in. This wristband must be worn at all times and visible by coaches who are on the deck. If the number of certified coaches that accompanies any team exceeds the number of coaches allowed on deck these additional coaches can gain admission at team check-in with a different color wristband but will be required to sit in […]
2/20/15 – Taping For All-American Dive Consideration
Due to the decrease in the amount of deck space where diving is taped for All-American consideration, credentials will be required for those wishing to be on deck to videotape the diving sessions. Anyone wishing to access the deck during these sessions will be required to go to the team check-in/media check-in entrance each day to request their credentials. There will be a different color credential for each day and this credential will allow these individuals on deck only during the diving sessions of the meet. Coaches who are aware of anyone that plans on videotaping the diving sessions should share this information with those individuals. Filming this year will occur on the opposite side of the deck next to the judges. Due to limited space there will be a waiting area on deck and then an area to film which you will access when your athlete is ready to dive.
Also, as a reminder […]

08/16/14 – Reminder about Carryover Ejections from 2013-2014
In several unfortunate situations each year, coaches or athletes with eligibility remaining are ejected near the end of the season, or near the end of the season for violations of Bylaw 15, Sportsmanships. Please note that when that happens, the penalty carries to the next year if the student-athlete remains enrolled, and to the new school if the coach changes jobs/schools.
Please note all rules related to player/coach ejections, including the provisions for varsity and non-varsity ejections, are listed at http://khsaa.org/dq-policy-on-reinstatement-of-disqualified-apolicy-on-reinstatement-of-disqualified-athletes-coaches/, and a complete list from 2013-2014 is listed on the KHSAA website at http://khsaa.org/dq_list_public/. You will need to review this listing to ensure that you properly require athletes and coaches to miss the required contests if in fact they were ejected.
Also note that being ineligible for scrimmages (sitting out) does NOT satisfy any penalty, such must be served at the varsity contest level.
If you have specific questions, please contact Michael Barren (mbarren@khsaa.org) […]
03/31/14 – Important Survey Available Concerning Swimming Facilities
It has been nearly twenty years since a complete facility inventory/assessment has been conducted in our state regarding competitive swimming pools and available resources for high school competitions. As swimming continues to grow, it is important that we have accurately identified the location of all of the competitive swimming facilities available to KHSAA member schools.
With that in mind, we are asking one person from each school to complete the online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/20132014swimdive on or before Monday, April 21, 2014. The data will be used for future research into regional site selection, alignment of teams and the maintenance and growth of the sport.
If you have questions regarding the survey, please contact Assistant Commissioner Darren Bilberry at the KHSAA.
