04/16/13 – Regional Tournament Sites
Now that we have had a year to settle into our new Soccer Alignment , we are going to make a slight change that will benefit all of us. Most of us have found the process for determining the regional site somewhat cumbersome and confusing to say the least. As we do with other teams sports ( Baseball, Basketball etc.) The Commissioner shall determine region tournament sites. Schools interested in hosting a region tournament shall submit their request through the defined site selection process . Normally we ask the teams to declare a site plan for future tournaments at the meeting prior to the regional tournament each year. Due to the fact that we must all plan well in advance of this years tournament we are asking you to meet as a collection of regional Coaches and/or Athletic Directors and select a site for this years Regional Tournament. Please forward your requests as a region to this office. But remember , the […]04/16/13 – Post Season Information

4/15/13 – Board Approves Competitive Cheer Dates/Site for 2013-14 School Year
The KHSAA Board of Control, at its meeting Monday, approved important dates and the State Competition date and site for the 2013-14 school year with regard to Competitive Cheer. The following was finalized at the meeting:
- Oct. 1 – Deadline to Designate Division
- Oct. 26?Dec. 7 – Regional Competitions
- Dec. 14 – State Competition at Alltech Arena, Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington
KHSAA Advisory Committee members will be conducting a Regional meeting to set the date/site for each regional event. The Board approved the second weekend of December as the date and Alltech Arena as the site also for 2014 and 2015. Securing a site where a traditional, yearly, corresponding date for State was key in the decision to allow for schools to schedule regional events and assist with those that travel out of state.
The following is a reminder of previous Board action for 2013-14:

04/15/13 – Board of Control Approves Moving KHSAA Sweet 16® Finals To Sunday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 15, 2013
After reviewing the 2013 KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16®, the Board of Control voted today in favor of a proposal to move the championship games of the boys’ and girls’ Sweet 16® to Sunday starting in 2014. The format change allows for the semifinals to be conducted as a standalone event on Saturday, and gives the participants more time to prepare and recuperate leading up to the championship game.
“We examined the format of our basketball tournaments from a number of different perspectives, and in the end, felt like it was time to move the championship game to Sunday. Separating the championship game from the semifinals, really makes an event out of the Saturday games for those final four teams,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “We think the added rest leading up to the championship game will not only benefit the health and safety of the students, it […]

4/12/13 – Remarks for KHSAA Hall of Fame
As I come here to night to bring you these brief greetings, I cannot help but believe that the founders, sponsors, staffs and visionaries of this great Hall of Fame are smiling. Those that are still with us, and those that have gone before us, would look upon this class as the very core of what we should be doing in recognizing our high school athletic heritage. If you don’t believe it, take a random ordered look around at the fantastic range of talent in tonight’s class:
We have:
- The outstanding All round athlete from Western Kentucky who was all-state in three sports and who has been far too long getting his due from this Hall;
- A young track phenom who was second fastest among his own siblings when he started running and later became America’s fastest human
- A man who dedicated his entire career to students as a middle school coach, […]

04/08/13 – Team Camps & Scrimmages
Coaches as you make your summer plans, keep in mind the Bylaws and how they may impact those plans. I received a copy of an email that has made its way around to the Soccer Coaches in Kentucky, it is from one of our state colleges advertising their “Team camp”. If you take your team to a team camp that overlaps the beginning of the season ( July 15th) you could run a danger of exceeding your two (2) scrimmage limit before the first session of the camp ends on the first day. Some of these camps will have your players involved with other schools in small sided games ( i.e. 3v3) and/or full sided scrimmages. Both of these activities count towards that limit. Remember Bylaw 25 Limitation of Seasons states: Sec. 7) Sports Specific Limitations- Soccer- Boys and Girls…. b) There shall be no more than two (2) scrimmages or practice games prior to the first regular season contest of that year. The only exception to […]04/02/13 – Reminders about Title IX and Participation List Submission Due April 30
As basketball season is now complete and spring may finally arrive in the coming days, it is time to remind each of you that the annual reports for Title IX and the Participation List are due on April 30. If you have specific questions about Title IX and the law itself, any of our Assistant Commissioners should be able to help get you some assistance. Asst. Commissioner Darren Bilberry is our primary contact for your questions related to the law and its interpretations. Information Technology Director Rob Catron as well as almost any of our support staff can help you with electronic issues including login and report preparation using the online system. The online system will have entry available beginning on Monday, April 8.
Again this year, based on feedback from the membership and members of our Athletic Directors Advisory Committee, there have been several system changes to make this task easier. Here are […]

03/25/13 – Clarification on Cold Weather Participation
The office has received several calls from people asking about a “Cold Weather Index” to parallel the existing Heat Index rules and regulations. At the present time, such an index does not exist in terms of a policy to eliminate participation at certain temperature combinations. However, the NFHS Sports Medicine Committee, as part of its 4th edition Sports Medicine Handbook provided to the member schools, has set up best practices documentation and suggestions to dealing with extreme cold. The recommendations are posted on the KHSAA web site at /sportsmedicine/nfhs/coldweatherrecommendations.pdf Please feel free to use this valuable resource document. If you need additional copies of the Sports Medicine Handbook, contact Marilyn Mitchell (mmitchell@khsaa.org) at the KHSAA offices.03/25/2013 – NAERA Statement on Helmets with After-Market Enhancements
STATEMENT FROM NAERA – 3/25/2013 –
The NFHS has been provided with a copy of a newly enacted policy by NEARA pertaining to after-market football helmet attachments. Under the policy, reconditioners would remove such attachments and either return them to the submitting high schools or destroy them, at the schools’ direction. The complete release is located at /football/naerapressreleasemarchregardingaftermarkethelmetattachments.pdf. Please note that if these devices are attached to a helmet submitted for recertification, the devices will be removed. If they (or replacement devices) are re-attached, the warranty / guarantee for the helmet recertification would be voided.
Coaches should also note that due to these after-market enhancements voiding any warranty and recertification, they cannot be worn in competition.
Contact your helmet manufacturer with questions.

03/06/13 – Tennis Post Season
Good morning, several people have inquired as to which Ball will be used at this years state championships, we just finished the bid process and we have chosen the “Wilson Championship Balls”. As a reminder, the BOC stopped providing Balls for the regional tournament two years ago, so each region will get together and decide how to provide for their regional. The sites and hosts for this years regions and sectionals have been set, you can find these for reference on our tennis page. Here is the link to that particular PDF; http://khsaa.org/httpdocs/tennis/regionalsites.pdf03/05/13 – Question of the Day
In less than 24 hours, I have been asked by four different coaches whether girls on their varsity teams can play JV Boys soccer too. It seems some club coaches have been telling the girls that their best chance for improvement is to play against the boys. Regardless of the motivation to play on both teams, the Board of Control has set policy for this issue, copied below is that policy for Soccer. You may find this in the Handbook, look under Board Policy E) Soccer 1) If a school sponsors both a boys and girls team in soccer, students may only play for the gender speci? c team (girls may only play for the girls’ team, boys may only play for the boys’ team. 2) If a school sponsors only a boys team and does not sponsor a girls team, female students may […]03/07/13 – Shake Contest During Tournament!
For the first time, the KHSAA is sponsoring a contest to see which student cheering section has the most “pep”. At the end of the first quarter, cued by the PA, the popular “Harlem Shake” music will be played and each cheering section will have a chance to show off their shake. Needs to stay clean (no disrobing, etc.) but should be lots of fun.Online voting will take place on khsaa.org. Voting will start during the first game! The school with the most votes will receive a $200 prize for their athletic program following the tournament!

03/01/13 – Sweet 16® Traffic Advisory-Inbound from West- US60 (Versailles Road)
Information will be posted here concerning traffic impact from construction on Versailles Road with Boys Sweet 16®
Beginning February of 2013, work will begin on a total overhaul of US60 (Versailles Road) from the Bluegrass Parkway through State Road 4 (New Circle Road).
At present time, it does not appear that the project will impact travel or movement into the Boys Sweet Sixteen as the project is set to have two lanes open at all times. Delays are expected at the intersection of Versailles Road and Man O’War (next to Bluegrass field) as that are normally has several more lanes.
Patrons coming from the west who desire to avoid the congestion and construction have a couple of desirable alternatives.

Running Clock Provisions – KHSAA Football (all high school levels of play)
RUNNING CLOCK PROVISIONS
This point differential applies to all football contests. The National Federation’s Football Rules Committee has a provision in the playing rules that permits state associations to adopt a “running clock” when a point differential is attained. This provision is in place for all football-playing schools for all levels in Kentucky:
Any time the score differential reaches thirty-five (35) points or more, the following changes will be made regarding rules determining when the clock will be stopped and/or started. In addition, in keeping with the rules that allow for mutual agreement between coaches for period shortening, the running clock may be implemented at any time by mutual agreement of the coaches. Coaches’ choice may not supersede the automatic provisions with a 35-point differential.
1. Once the running clock provisions are implemented, the clock shall continue to run from the point that the differential occurs (without regard to a later return to less […]

02/06/13 – Wrestling State Notes 2
Today Coaches, I want to send this reminder of how important the 5th place finisher in regions can become. Should a school have an athlete finish 1-4 in the region and he/she is unable to compete in the state tournament due to schedule conflicts, injury or other documented reason; the remainder of the bracket will be “rolledup”, and the replacement wrestler seeded fourth. If a bracket position is vacated and unable to be filled by an alternate from the region, the option will roll in random order to another region. Coaches are advised to weigh-in any fifth place regional wrestler in case of replacement the day of the State Tournament. If any of you have a wrestler pull out, please contact this office ASAP so that we may call the next school inline, so that their 5th place finisher may enter the tournament.02/05/13 State Bowling Information for Participating Schools and Fans

At its meeting last week, the KHSAA Board of Control approved a staff recommendation to give teams in three-team districts options as to the scheduling of required games. This option had been suggested by several athletic administrators at KHSAA member schools to address scheduling concerns. Three-team districts in soccer, will continue to be seeded by rule. However, the districts will decide (by majority vote) if they play each other twice, or once during regular season. This change should be considered as plans are made for 2013-2014 schedules and play.Basketball District/Region Financial Reports (2006 to present)
