04/30/13 – Statewide Winners Announced For Forcht Bank/KHSAA Sportsmanship Recognition Program
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 30, 2013
Beechwood’s Alexis Hunter and Monroe County’s Chad Wilson were honored as the statewide winners of the 2013 Forcht Bank/KHSAA Sportsmanship Recognition program at the 17th annual awards banquet on Sunday in Lexington. Hunter and Wilson were each awarded a $3,000 scholarship, and were chosen from a pool of 32 regional winners. Each regional winner received a $350 scholarship, along with an award from Forcht Bank and the KSHAA.
This marks the 17th year for the Sportsmanship Recognition program, which is open to all seniors that have participated in athletics and/or sport activities (cheerleading, bowling, archery and bass fishing). One male and one female are recognized from each school, with the local school honorees narrowed down to 32 regional winners, one male and one female from each of the 16 regions. 04/24/13 – NFHS Offers Free Pole Vault Course and Calendar Reminder for 2014
POLE VAULT COURSE
The NFHS released a free course for coaches, participants, and parents on Pole Vault.
Through the collaborative efforts of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), the NCAA and USA Track & Field, an online pole vault skills course has been developed for coaches and athletes and is available for free on the NFHS Coach Education Program Web site at www.nfhslearn.com.
The course, “Pole Vault: Successful Skill Development,” is designed to further advance the knowledge of coaches and pole vaulters at all levels of sport – youth, high school and college — by teaching the introductory skills and safety aspects of the pole vault.

04/23/13 – OBSOLETE-SUPERSEDED-Changes Approved by KBE to Codify KHSAA Authority Over Middle School Athletics

In this document, I am going to try and summarize, in as concise a means as possible, the changes made to 702 KAR 7:065 which specify regulations for athletics at the middle school level. This first part will be about the regulation itself, and the changes
that will be made due to its passage. An additional document, which will be able to be revised and edited as more questions arise, will explain many of the changes in layman’s terms.
Pursuant to KRS 156.070 (2), the Kentucky Board of Education is responsible for all levels of interscholastic athletics in all grades and has delegated such authority to the KHSAA for many years. For most of that time, the regulations have focused on play

Hard to believe that the regular season is close to completion. I realize many of you will take advantage of being together at the regional tournaments to work on next years schedules. This means you just cant say “we always play on week two”, check the actual dates before you find yourself double booking a date. The regional week will again begin the weekend of the Derby and State will be May 14-17.04/21/13 – Changes to KHSAA High School Rules Approved by KBE
Each year, the KHSAA must submit through KDE, any requested changes to 702 KAR 7:065 effecting governance of high school athletics. Pursuant to KRS 156.070 (2), the Kentucky Board of Education is responsible for all levels of interscholastic athletics in all grades, and has delegated such authority to the KHSAA for many years. Annually, requests for changes to regulations for interscholastic athletic competition at the high school level are submitted from a variety of sources through the KHSAA Board of Control. Normally, this involves a proposed set of changes that are voted on in the fall by the membership, then approved by the Board of Control, and subsequently reviewed as part of 702 KAR 7:065 by the Kentucky Board of Education. After these steps, the proposed changes are taken to the legislature through the Administrative Regulation Review Subcommittee, for final approval.

04/22/13 – KHSAA Bass Fishing Championship This Week; Top Officials Honored By KHSAA; Baseball-Softball Draw Show Tomorrow

First KHSAA Bass Fishing State Championship This Weekend At KenLake Marina
The first-ever KHSAA Bass Fishing State Championship will take place this weekend (April 26-27) at the KenLake Marina in Hardin. Forty-five teams advanced from the four regional tournaments to the state championship, which begins Friday morning with the opening day boat launch at 7 a.m. (CT). Each two-person team is allotted eight hours on the lake, with the weigh-in beginning at approximately 3 p.m.
The tournament format will be repeated on Saturday, with the boats launching in reverse order from day one. Each team can turn in a maximum of five fish each round, with each day’s catch counting towards the team’s total for the competition. 04/18/13 Pole Vault Box Collar Padding Announcment
On April 4, 2013 the National Federation announced a rule change regarding the use of the new ASTM approved standard for padding on pole vaulting box collars. Due to the timing of this rule change, the implementation decision for 2013 post season has been deferred to the state associations until the full rules committee of the NFHS can meet to discuss 2013-2014 rule change. This change is not based on injury data but a desire to allow progressive protective equipment to be added at a point in time when manufacturing supply and availability make it feasible.
After reviewing the situation and looking at both the stock issues of the newer kits and the lack of equitable practice opportunities on the new equipment, the KHSAA will handle this situation as follows:

04/22/23 – Draw for Forcht Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament Tuesday
The draw for region vs. region match-ups for the 2013 Forcht Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament will be conducted Tuesday, April 23 at 2 p.m. (ET). The draw will be streamed live on www.khsaa.tv in partnership with iHigh.com. The 2013 event is scheduled for June 3-8 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington.
04/22/2013 – Minimum Number of Meets Increased for Postseason
At the April 15, 2013 Board of Control Meeting the board voted to increase the number of meets required for student-athletes to compete in the postseason. Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, the minimum number of meets a student-athlete must compete in during the regular season to be eligible for the postseason has been increased from two to four.
04/19/13 – Limitation of Seasons Discussion – Possible Reduction of Contests to be Proposed
The following is an excerpt from the Board meeting summary of the April, 2013 Board of Control meeting.
At its April meeting, the Board continued its discussion regarding game limits for the sports of the KHSAA. The Board had asked staff to research surrounding state limits for comparison (results are posted as attachments at http://portal.ksba.org/public/Meeting.aspx?PublicAgencyID=4374&PublicMeetingID=8983&AgencyTypeID=1). In addition, at this discussion, the Board asked for further reports about the actual number of games being played, using the scoreboard data as a resource (that data is also posted in the committee material). The review of game limits originally began with a request from the State Superintendents and Principals Associations following open dialogue at their meetings and has continued for many months through discussion at the state AD conference and many other meetings such as the different sport advisory committees and state coaches’ conferences. Several of you have asked questions about determining the answer to question number 3 on the Part 1 Bylaw 13 Survey. Below are some instructions to assist you with finding that answer.
Go to http://applications.education.ky.gov/src/Default.aspx Center panel, where it says “District Report Card”, select the district and click “View Card” Click on the fourth tab that says “Learning Environment” The first yellowed line down says “Spending per student”. The district amount (NOT THE STATE AMOUNT) is the answer to the question. It may vary depending upon which district your school is located, especially if you are in an area that has both independent and regular public districts. Now that we have had a year to settle into our new Soccer Alignment , we are going to make a slight change that will benefit all of us. Most of us have found the process for determining the regional site somewhat cumbersome and confusing to say the least. As we do with other teams sports ( Baseball, Basketball etc.) The Commissioner shall determine region tournament sites. Schools interested in hosting a region tournament shall submit their request through the defined site selection process . Normally we ask the teams to declare a site plan for future tournaments at the meeting prior to the regional tournament each year. Beginning in 2013, the State Volleyball Tournament Championship match will be conducted on Sunday afternoon following action taken by the KHSAA Board of Control on Monday. After review of the Sunday play for the Boys’ State Basketball Tournament, the Board approved the move. Previously, the State Quarterfinals, State Semi-finals and the State Championship were staged all on Saturday.
Following is the tentative schedule for the 2013 State Volleyball Tournament scheduled for Nov. 8-10 at Valley High School in Louisville:

4/15/13 – Board Approves Competitive Cheer Dates/Site for 2013-14 School Year
The KHSAA Board of Control, at its meeting Monday, approved important dates and the State Competition date and site for the 2013-14 school year with regard to Competitive Cheer. The following was finalized at the meeting:
- Oct. 1 – Deadline to Designate Division
- Oct. 26?Dec. 7 – Regional Competitions
- Dec. 14 – State Competition at Alltech Arena, Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington
KHSAA Advisory Committee members will be conducting a Regional meeting to set the date/site for each regional event. The Board approved the second weekend of December as the date and Alltech Arena as the site also for 2014 and 2015. Securing a site where a traditional, yearly, corresponding date for State was key in the decision to allow for schools to schedule regional events and assist with those that travel out of state.

04/15/13 – Board of Control Approves Moving KHSAA Sweet 16® Finals To Sunday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 15, 2013
After reviewing the 2013 KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16®, the Board of Control voted today in favor of a proposal to move the championship games of the boys’ and girls’ Sweet 16® to Sunday starting in 2014. The format change allows for the semifinals to be conducted as a standalone event on Saturday, and gives the participants more time to prepare and recuperate leading up to the championship game.
“We examined the format of our basketball tournaments from a number of different perspectives, and in the end, felt like it was time to move the championship game to Sunday. 2013 KHSAA Hall of Fame Class To Be Honored Saturday
The KHSAA Hall of Fame Class of 2013 will be honored at the Association’s annual banquet on Saturday, April 13th at the Lexington Center’s Bluegrass Ballroom. The nine-member Class of 2013 features Pascal Benson (football, baseball and basketball), Julie Ditty (tennis), Tyson Gay (track and field), Burney Jenkins (officiating), Roger Klein (tennis), Frank Miklavcic (track and field, and cross country), Ron Myers (baseball), Jaime Walz Richey (basketball) and John Dee Wilson (basketball).
The Hall of Fame banquet will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction and social hour, followed by dinner and the induction ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Tickets to the banquet are $60 each and can be purchased by contacting the KHSAA by phone at (859) 299-5472. 04/08/13 – Team Camps & Scrimmages
Coaches as you make your summer plans, keep in mind the Bylaws and how they may impact those plans. I received a copy of an email that has made its way around to the Soccer Coaches in Kentucky, it is from one of our state colleges advertising their “Team camp”. If you take your team to a team camp that overlaps the beginning of the season ( July 15th) you could run a danger of exceeding your two (2) scrimmage limit before the first session of the camp ends on the first day. Some of these camps will have your players involved with other schools in small sided games ( i.e. 3v3) and/or full sided scrimmages. Both of these activities count towards that limit. Remember Bylaw 25 Limitation of Seasons states: Sec. 7) Sports Specific Limitations- Soccer- Boys and Girls…. b) There shall be no more than two (2) scrimmages or practice games prior to the first regular season contest of that year. As basketball season is now complete and spring may finally arrive in the coming days, it is time to remind each of you that the annual reports for Title IX and the Participation List are due on April 30. Any school that missed the April 1 deadline for the Bass Fishing Regional Tournament can still register on site at the rules meeting by going to the KHSAA website under Bass Fishing Regional Tournament Information and Instructions and filling out and submitting the Late Registration form:

The Bass Fishing Rules Clinic is open for viewing at this time. The presentation can be viewed from any computer, and is a web-based flash video product that should be viewable through any web browser. Once you advance to the last slide of the presentation, correspondence is automatically generated to the KHSAA so that you can receive credit.
