01/28/21 – NFHS Announces Universal Tennis as New Official Partner
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has announced a new official partnership with Universal Tennis, a global online platform for connecting players, coaches, clubs and federations to grow the sport.
Universal Tennis is most widely known for the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR), a system that provides an accurate rating for every participating tennis player in the world regardless of age, gender or nationality. The UTR algorithm uses scores and quality of opponents from a player’s past 30 eligible matches to calculate a listing value on a point scale between 1 and 16.50. Players also have access to additional statistics that allow for a better understanding of personal performance as they track their improvement. With more than 2.3 million users from about 125 countries, UTR seeks to help players find better matches for any skill level.

12/10/20- Board of Control Confirms Decision to Start Winter Sports Practice December 14
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 10, 2020
The Board of Control conducted a special meeting on Thursday morning, upholding its earlier decision by a 12-5 vote to begin practice for winter sports on Dec. 14th and regular-season competition on Jan. 4th. Prior to confirming the start of the winter sports season, the Board voted 12-5 to push back the dates for the boys’ and girls’ Sweet 16® to March 29-April 8 after narrowly defeating other alternative dates, with the event schedule and format to be finalized at a later date in consultation with Rupp Arena.
“These are extremely complex issues. Our Board has spent an extraordinary amount of time examining every aspect surrounding the resumption of sports, particularly those that are indoors and have extreme concerns from public health officials,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “At the same time, there is significant data being shared about the need for students to be engaged with one another […]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 27, 2020
Student-athlete participation increased for the third-straight year in Kentucky High School Athletic Association sports and sport-activities to reach record levels in 2019-20. A total of 107,166 rostered participants competed across the KHSAA’s 13 sports and six sport-activities according to information submitted by the membership, surpassing last year’s then-record total of 106,931. Football was one of 12 offerings to show an increase from the previous year, breaking a trend of declining participation for the last three years by adding 202 new student-athletes [freshmen, JV, varsity] during the 2019-20 season to remain the state’s most popular sport with 13,277 rostered participants.
“The continued rise in student-athlete participation the last three years emphasizes the importance of school-based athletics in the fabric of the educational experience for these young adults,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “The importance of these coach-to-student and student-to-student relationships is only amplified in these uncertain times, as we strive […]

09/23/19- KHSAA and Midway University Expand Student-Athlete Awards Program
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 23, 2019
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association and Midway University are expanding their partnership in the Midway University/KHSAA Student-Athlete of the Year Awards program to include recognition for males beginning in the fall of 2019. The program originally began in the spring of 2016 as a way for Midway University to honor female student-athletes, and will now include male and female student-athletes for all KHSAA-sanctioned sports and sport-activities.
“We value our partnership with the KHSAA as we expand our on-campus offerings to include male students and male sports and look forward to continuing to get our message out across the Commonwealth to even more student-athletes and potential students,” said Midway University President John P. 09/19/19 – Board Approves Next Steps for Potential Lacrosse Sanctioning
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 19, 2019
The Board of Control approved a recommendation on Thursday to appoint a sport-specific focus group to study the sanctioning of boys’ and girls’ lacrosse following a survey of the membership. Earlier this month, the Association asked the designated representative for each member school to provide feedback on the possibilities of adding lacrosse as a sanctioned sport in either the fall or the spring. The membership responded positively that they would have a team and enter championship competition if the KHSAA were to conduct a spring lacrosse championship for both boys (56 votes) and girls (54 votes). Interest for a fall championship failed to meet the required 50-school threshold for further consideration.
Following review of the survey, the Board approved a recommendation from staff to form a focus group to confirm genuine interest in schools adding lacrosse should the KHSAA sanction a spring championship, with the earliest implementation being for […]
07/18/19 – Calendar Change for 2020 Top Seed Tennis Club/KHSAA State Tennis Championships
During the course of its first organizational meeting of the 2019-20 academic year on July 11 in Covington, the Board of Control addressed the calendar for the 2020 Top Seed Tennis Club/KHSAA State Tennis Championships.
After potential schedule conflicts were discovered following the scheduling of the USTA Southern Closed Tournament, the Board took action in order to accommodate participating student-athletes and prevent them from having to make a choice between participating in the Top Seed Tennis Club/KHSAA State Tennis Championships or the Southern Closed. With that goal in mind, the Board approved a recommendation to shift the state tennis dates for 2020 to June 1-3.
“While we never like to change event dates, we clearly need to work closely with Kentucky USTA to minimize conflicts,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “We will also be working with that group and its national counterparts to see if this conflict can be avoided in the future.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 11, 2019The Board of Control conducted its first organizational meeting of the 2019-20 academic year on Thursday in Covington, finalizing the format of the state golf tournament while also addressing the calendar for the state tennis championships and the future of esports.
After reviewing feedback following its earlier decision to change the team format to a four-person squad at the state tournament (which was a format of the tournament in past years), the Board of Control elected to revisit the issue at its July meeting. After significant discussion, the Board eventually settled on a final resolution to address its original concerns with the size of the field, match its boys and girls alignment, ensure all schools have an opportunity to participate in the championship regardless of squad size and complete the tournament during the mid-fall season while also addressing the team composition […]

05/03/17 – Regional Tennis Sportmanship
As regional play approaches, we would like to remind all schools of behavioral expectations to further emphasize sportsmanship in our Tennis program. High school tennis is an extension of the classroom, and as such, all involved should conduct themselves in a manner that reflects teamwork, respect, responsibility and perspective. That includes coaches, student-athletes and spectators.
Officials expect good behavior and will quickly penalize misconduct. To achieve this goal, all involved should:
- Avoid unnecessary noise during play. This includes cell phones, pagers, etc.
- Stay well away from the fence surrounding the courts so as not to distract any players or hinder any coaches.
- Do not talk to players from the time they take the court to warm up until the match is over. This includes timeouts and set breaks.
- Coaches, be sure to allow the Officials or opposing coaches to correct the […]

09/22/16 – Board of Control Approves Unified/Adapted Opportunities in Bowling; Alters State Tennis Format
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 22, 2016
During its regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Wednesday, the Board of Control approved a proposal to add Unified and Adapted opportunities in the sport-activity of Bowling, beginning with the 2017 state championship. Bowling will be the second KHSAA offering to include Unified and Adapted opportunities, joining Track & Field which began including Unified events in 2015 following a joint partnership between KHSAA and Special Olympics Kentucky. The Unified Bowling events will be added to the singles competition on Feb. 9, with a final schedule to be announced at a later date. Unified sport allows for combined competition involving intellectually disabled students and non-intellectually disabled counterparts, while adapted sport allows for participation by those with physical disability.
“One of the most gratifying things we have been able to do in the past few years is the addition of adapted and unified track and field events,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian […]
09/22/16 – Board Approves New Provisions for State Tennis
After hearing from its membership and discussing the issue with the KHSAA Staff, the Board of Control yesterday decided to return the state tennis team title to a points-based championship for 2017. The Association will continue to sponsor an Individual and Doubles Championship, which will be held May 18-20 in Lexington.
Following a change in format to the 2016 State Tennis Tournament, significant feedback was gathered from the membership after the individual and team events were split over separate weekends. The split, necessitated by competition limitations recommended by the USTA and its sports medicine researchers, was put in place to prevent any student-athlete from participating in more than two full-length matches per day. The change also necessitated mandated play to determine a true region champion, adding additional matches to an already full competition schedule for most players.
While team tennis has expanded over the last eight years of play, the requirement of seven players per school […]

04/25/16 – Draw Show For Baseball, Softball and Tennis Set For 12 PM Wednesday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 25, 2016
The draws for the 2016 Republic Bank/KHSAA Tennis Team Championship, the Rawlings/KHSAA Baseball State Tournament and the Worth/KHSAA Softball State Tournament will be determined Wednesday, April 27th at 12 p.m. when the Draw Show is conducted at the Association’s headquarters and webcast at KHSAA.tv.
This year will mark the first time Tennis is included in the spring Draw Show, as recommended changes from the Kentucky Medical Association’s Sports Medicine Committee led to the Board of Control approving a format change to the state Tennis tournament. The changes separated the team championship event from the singles/doubles competition, which were traditionally played together, in order to limit the number of matches a student-athlete could compete in each day. 11/19/15 – Board Approves Revised Schedule For State Baseball, Tennis Tournaments
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 19, 2015
On Wednesday, the Board of Control approved a proposal from KHSAA staff to revise the schedule for the state baseball tournament during its regularly scheduled meeting at the Association’s headquarters. In an effort to alleviate competitive issues under the current format resulting from pitching limitations and roster depth, as outlined in the extensive research conducted by Lawrence County Athletic Director Travis Feltner and validated through staff review of the current format, the new format will provide a minimum of three days of rest between the quarterfinals and the semifinals. Beginning with this year’s state tournament, the revised format will allow teams the opportunity to use their pitchers at the top of the rotation in both the early rounds (first round/quarterfinals) and the later rounds (semifinals/championship).
“Pitching limitations are in place for the health and safety of our student-athletes,” KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett said. “In keeping with the overall desire of the […]
11/19/15 – Tennis Tournament Format Changes
For the past several years, the KHSAA staff and Board of Control have been reviewing the region and state tennis formats due to concerns expressed from experts in Sports Medicine. At its recent meeting, the KHSAA Board of Control approved a staff recommendation based on feedback and consensus from the Commissioner’s Tennis Advisory Committee, to no longer play the team vs. team and individual singles/doubles state competitions on the same days. Rather, these events will be separated to conduct a separate team vs. team tennis (seven-player) tournament. The exact date, location and time of these team matches will be determined in the near future with the traditional singles and doubles event remaining on its corresponding weekend.
The Kentucky Medical Association’s Sports Medicine Committee, acting on a report and adopting research-based findings from the USTA, the governing body for Youth and Adult Tennis in the U.S., had recently strongly recommended that changes be made to ensure that […]

01/31/14- Alignment Proposal
At its January meeting, the Board of Control approved a draft realignment of teams in Tennis to be in effect for 2014-2015. This is part of the Board’s continuing efforts on the part of the membership to place schools in the same region as they are placed in basketball provided the numbers of schools allow for this placement. This decision will allow Tennis to be more consistent with other KHSAA sports (Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, and Softball) that have been realigned recently to the same regional format. Commentary and feedback will be accepted from the member schools by way of a survey that will be sent to the Principal of each member school. Following feedback from the schools, final adoption will be considered at the Board’s April meeting for implementation in 2014-15.

04/22/13 – Corresponding Dates
Hard to believe that the regular season is close to completion. I realize many of you will take advantage of being together at the regional tournaments to work on next years schedules. I want to take a moment and remind you Coaches that as you begin planning for next season please take a close look at the corresponding calendar; http://khsaa.org/httpdocs/handbook/correspondingdates/tenniscorrespondingdates.pdf Every so many years the calendar rolls up a week and next year is one of those. This means you just cant say “we always play on week two”, check the actual dates before you find yourself double booking a date. The regional week will again begin the weekend of the Derby and State will be May 14-17.04/16/13 – Post Season Information
Coaches and Regional Managers, please review the links to information about the Tennis program found on the Tennis page of the KHSAA website. They have been recently updated and all should be current. http://khsaa.org/sports/spring/tennis/ You will be able to find Regional Contact information, forms that will need to be filed and other pertinent information for both the Regional and State Championships. Please make yourself familiar with the Tennis page and the available links.03/25/13 – Clarification on Cold Weather Participation
The office has received several calls from people asking about a “Cold Weather Index” to parallel the existing Heat Index rules and regulations. At the present time, such an index does not exist in terms of a policy to eliminate participation at certain temperature combinations. However, the NFHS Sports Medicine Committee, as part of its 4th edition Sports Medicine Handbook provided to the member schools, has set up best practices documentation and suggestions to dealing with extreme cold. The recommendations are posted on the KHSAA web site at /sportsmedicine/nfhs/coldweatherrecommendations.pdf Please feel free to use this valuable resource document. If you need additional copies of the Sports Medicine Handbook, contact Marilyn Mitchell (mmitchell@khsaa.org) at the KHSAA offices.03/06/13 – Tennis Post Season
Good morning, several people have inquired as to which Ball will be used at this years state championships, we just finished the bid process and we have chosen the “Wilson Championship Balls”. As a reminder, the BOC stopped providing Balls for the regional tournament two years ago, so each region will get together and decide how to provide for their regional. The sites and hosts for this years regions and sectionals have been set, you can find these for reference on our tennis page. Here is the link to that particular PDF; http://khsaa.org/httpdocs/tennis/regionalsites.pdf01/28/13 – Board of Control Approves Basketball Region I, Statewide Wrestling Realignments
