05/21/21 – Reminders for Multi-Event Athletes, Regional & State Track Meet

Track and Field Blog Updates

We want to remind Athletic Directors and coaches about the strict time schedule at postseason track meets. Throughout the regular season, we realize that many athletes are competing in a rolling schedule style meet. However, both the regional and state track meets are structured to be held to a specific time schedule. With the state meet taking at-large qualifiers, it is important that all 21 regions adhere to a strict time schedule to ensure competitive fairness for the at-large qualifiers attempting to advance to the state meet. With the regional schedule, the games committee has determined that 12 minutes is the check-in/out time limit.

Managers are required to ensure that the regional meets adhere to the posted time schedule. Events cannot start before the published scheduled time. This allows for the same amount of rest for all athletes competing across the state when qualifying for at-large positions.

It is critical for coaches to assume the […]

05/20/21 – Procedure for Unified/Adapted Track & Field Entries for Postseason

Track and Field Blog Updates

In preparation for the 2021 KHSAA Track & Field postseason, we wanted to remind you of the opportunities available for the student-athletes of Kentucky. The KHSAA will continue to offer Unified (in partnership with Special Olympics Kentucky) and Adapted events to include regional and state track & field competitions. While most unified and/or adapted athletes have been participating throughout the season, it is important to review the following information prior to the start of the postseason.

Unified partner athletes and special athletes must be listed on the Unified roster in the KHSAA database and each school needs to check the box for a Unified Team if they wish to compete in the regional and/or state competition. The Track & Field head coach or Athletic Director for each participating member school should enter Unified student-athletes on its postseason roster on the KHSAA database for Unified Track & Field.

From that postseason roster, coaches must submit regional […]

The Board of Control conducted a special meeting on Thursday morning, upholding its earlier decision by a 12-5 vote to begin practice for winter sports on Dec. 14th and regular-season competition on Jan. 4th. “These are extremely complex issues. Our Board has spent an extraordinary amount of time examining every aspect surrounding the resumption of sports, particularly those that are indoors and have extreme concerns from public health officials,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “At the same time, there is significant data being shared about the need for students to be engaged with one another […]

07/27/20 – Student-Athlete Participation Rises for the 3rd Straight Year to New Record Totals

2020-2021 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 27, 2020

Student-athlete participation increased for the third-straight year in Kentucky High School Athletic Association sports and sport-activities to reach record levels in 2019-20. A total of 107,166 rostered participants competed across the KHSAA’s 13 sports and six sport-activities according to information submitted by the membership, surpassing last year’s then-record total of 106,931. Football was one of 12 offerings to show an increase from the previous year, breaking a trend of declining participation for the last three years by adding 202 new student-athletes [freshmen, JV, varsity] during the 2019-20 season to remain the state’s most popular sport with 13,277 rostered participants.

“The continued rise in student-athlete participation the last three years emphasizes the importance of school-based athletics in the fabric of the educational experience for these young adults,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “The importance of these coach-to-student and student-to-student relationships is only amplified in these uncertain times, as we strive […]

06/18/20 – NFHS to Halt Printing of Spring Sports Rules Publications; 2020 Rules to be Used in 2021 Season

Athletic Department Blog Updates

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Due to the cancellation of spring sports at high schools across the country, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) will not be publishing new rules (both print and digital) for 2021 in the sports of baseball, softball, track and field, girls lacrosse and boys lacrosse.

Because very few schools were able to compete in these sports prior to the March shutdown of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, competition in these sports in 2021 will be conducted under 2020 NFHS rules for baseball, softball, track and field, girls lacrosse and boys lacrosse.

“Since most schools were not able to practice or play a game in these sports, we thought it was best to carry the 2020 rules publications forward to next year,” said Dr. Karissa Niehoff, NFHS executive director. “Our rules committees in these sports will conduct virtual meetings this summer but will not be approving any additional rules […]

    Track and Field Blog Updates

In preparation for the 2019 KHSAA State Track & Field Championships (May 30-June 1), we wanted to remind you of the opportunities available for the student-athletes of Kentucky. The KHSAA will continue to offer Unified and Adapted events to include regional and state track & field competitions.

The track & field head coach or Athletic Director for each participating member school should enter Unified student-athletes on its postseason roster on the KHSAA database for Unified track prior to the deadline for entries.

04/03/19 – Pole Vault Coaches Certification

    Track and Field Blog Updates

As a reminder, Athletic Directors have the ability to designate a Pole Vault coach within the KHSAA database. This capability has greatly enhanced the ability to manage provisions within the rules, in particular, those related to Track and Field. For the 2019 season:

    • Member schools must have a designated coach with the proper training (NFHS or PVSCB) to enter Pole Vault competitors in regular AND postseason competition.
    • Please be sure to check the KHSAA database and ensure that if you are going to enter vaulters in meets, you have a coach designated as the Pole Vault Coach (under positions/roles after you define them as head or assistant coaches).

We wanted to remind Athletic Directors, coaches, and student-athletes about the additional requirements for the Pole Vault event. It is necessary in order to attempt to minimize risk, that coaches have additional training for the pole vault prior to athletes being able to enter a competition.

For 2019, there are two options for coaches to complete, and both count equally toward the requirement.

09/25/18 – Board of Control Addresses Future Championship Formats and Schedules in Several Sports

    2018-2019 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 25, 2018

The Board of Control conducted its first meeting of the 2018-19 academic year on Thursday, September 20 at the Association offices. Much of the day’s agenda involved ongoing discussion of the future format of several KHSAA championships. Among the action taken, the Board gave tentative approval to transitioning the State Softball and Baseball Tournaments to 8-team single elimination events, with the key provision of re-establishing semi-state play, preferably at non-high school sites. This builds upon last year’s decision to move away from the double-elimination format in Softball, in the interest of player safety and gender participation experience equity.

The tentative plan would transition these championships to 8-team events with first round, semi-state games, rotated in geographic pods and played at a neutral site. The Commissioner and staff were directed to develop site criteria for semi-state games for review at October’s Board meeting, with the goal to […]

APPROVED DRAFT TRACK AND FIELD ALIGNMENT – 2017-18 to 2020-21 – DISTRIBUTED TO MEMBERSHIP JUNE 2017

Schools were divided following ranking the four-year average enrollment of track schools, with 40% of the schools placed in 1A, 30% in 2A, 30% in 1A. Cross Country-only schools were added following division. Due to fluctuating participation numbers, an exact balance between regions in both Track and Cross Country is not likely attainable and the existing basketball region boundaries were used where there were multiple options.

    05/17/17 – State Track & Field Roll-up

    Track and Field Blog Updates

As an experiment for 2017, the KHSAA asked coaches to notify the Association when they desired to scratch an athlete from an event during the State Meet. This originally came as a request from the members of the Commissioner’s Track and Field/Cross Country Advisory committee to lessen the number of empty lanes at the State Meet. The process is under review and will be evaluated to determine its feasibility for the future. Below describes the procedure for implementing this request for 2017. This procedure was implemented today (Wednesday) based on scratches received by midnight on Tuesday.

The size and scope of the State Meet mean that the procedure has to be narrowly focused and able to be implemented in a streamlined fashion, especially given the myriad of tasks being accomplished this week in preparation.

Below describes the procedure for implementing this request for 2017.

    • If a state qualifier was scratched from an event, the coach of the […]

02/02/17 – Further Clarification on Track Meet Participation

    Track and Field Blog Updates

To further clarify the rules and regulations involving participation in indoor or outdoor track meets, we want to ensure our coaches are aware of the limitations when entering meets.

    • Schools that choose to enter athletes in a meet under the school name (or in the case where meets allow schools to enter as a school and a member chooses to do so) cannot compete against schools or teams located in Kentucky who are eligible to join the KHSAA but have decided not to do so at this time;
    • There are no restrictions regarding competition against out-of-state non-member schools or competition against out-of-state entities of other structures, as that is a local school decision;
    • If schools have athletes entering a meet, even as unattached or unaffiliated individuals, it is the school’s responsibility to understand the Bylaw 23 restrictions (Limitation of Seasons) and who the athletes are competing against;

01/11/17 – Reminders about Participation in Indoor Track Meets

    Track and Field Blog Updates

For the past several years, groups and institutions like the University of Kentucky have sponsored indoor track meets. At UK for example, one meet has historically been conducted for Kentucky high schools in January and a second meet in February was an open meet with non-member teams from out-of-state and a variety of athletes and teams. Because of the way that the February meet was structured, there were previously specific limitations on KHSAA school-based participation, especially against non-member teams.

Because of recent bylaw changes in regulations, the only teams that are prohibited from competing against KHSAA member schools are schools or groups of athletes located in Kentucky who are eligible to join the KHSAA, but have decided not to do so at this time. There are no longer restrictions against out-of-state non-member schools or competition against out-of-state entities of other structures, as that is a local school decision.

It is important to note that indoor track and field is not […]

    Track and Field Blog Updates

Reminders as you arrive at the State Meet site at UK Outdoor Stadium on Friday or Saturday:

    08/29/14 – Track Corresponding Dates

    Track and Field Blog Updates

We have had a few inquiries about the dates for postseason track. Last season the board approved a two week period for regionals to be held due to a change in the NFHS calendar and a scheduling issue with the state host facility.

We will again schedule a two week period to complete the regional competition. The two week period seemed to be beneficial to schools for many reasons, but mostly the benefit of scheduling around May school scheduling conflicts was expressed.  It also allowed schools to be more confident with rescheduling due to weather related issues.

Please take a look at the corresonding dates calendar from the KHSAA handbook posted on the khsaa.org website – http://khsaa.org/handbook/correspondingdates/trackcorrespondingdates.pdf

The last asterisk denotes the two weeks possible for track regional competition.

There will no longer be a waiver to run a meet once the regional meet has run.

08/16/14 – Reminder about Carryover Ejections from 2013-2014

    Athletic Department Blog Updates

In several unfortunate situations each year, coaches or athletes with eligibility remaining are ejected near the end of the season, or near the end of the season for violations of Bylaw 15, Sportsmanships. Please note that when that happens, the penalty carries to the next year if the student-athlete remains enrolled, and to the new school if the coach changes jobs/schools.

Please note all rules related to player/coach ejections, including the provisions for varsity and non-varsity ejections, are listed at http://khsaa.org/dq-policy-on-reinstatement-of-disqualified-apolicy-on-reinstatement-of-disqualified-athletes-coaches/, and a complete list from 2013-2014 is listed on the KHSAA website at http://khsaa.org/dq_list_public/. You will need to review this listing to ensure that you properly require athletes and coaches to miss the required contests if in fact they were ejected.

Also note that being ineligible for scrimmages (sitting out) does NOT satisfy any penalty, such must be served at the varsity contest level.

If you have specific questions, please contact Michael Barren (mbarren@khsaa.org) […]
